After a fantastic weekend that saw the University of Maine men’s hockey team sweep what was the No. 2 team in the country, the No. 6 Black Bears look to remain hot against Hockey East foe the University of Vermont.
Gaining two victories over the University of North Dakota, the Black Bears jumped six spots in the rankings and were named Hockey East Team of the Week.
At 3-1-2, the Black Bears travel to Burlington, VT, to take on the winless Catamounts.
At 0-1-2, the Catamounts will rely on forward Wahsontiio Stacey, who leads Vermont with three goals in three games.
To have any opportunity to pick up that first victory against the Black Bears, Vermont will have to try and stop UMaine’s potent offense. Seven different players have already tallied at least five points, with junior forward Spencer Abbott leading all Black Bears with five goals and six assists for 11 points.
Included in that dynamic group of scorers is reigning Hockey East Player of the Week Brian Flynn, whose two first-period goals in the opening game against the Fighting Sioux were the catalyst for the weekend, and Flynn finished with three goals on the weekend to garner the honor.
In the Black Bears’ first six games this season, only Abbott and junior forward Gustav Nyquist have tallied a point in each of them, and dating back to last season, Abbott has scored or assisted in eight straight games, while Nyquist has registered a point in seven straight.
Nyquist reached the 100-point plateau for his career in Friday’s game against North Dakota, becoming only the 48th Black Bear to reach the milestone.
With all the success on the offensive end, the Black Bears have remained stingy in the backline, especially during the penalty kill. In the last three games, the Black Bears have allowed just one power play goal in 20 chances.
The game against the Catamounts takes place this Saturday.
