The University of Maine women’s hockey team split the weekend series with Niagara University, winning the first game and losing the latter by the identical score of 3-1.
After the weekend, the Black Bears sit at 4-4 on the season, while Niagara picked up their first victory and brought their record to 1-4.
After a scoreless first period Friday, senior forward Jennie Gallo got the first goal on the board from a pass by junior forward Dominique Goutsis. The goal was Gallo’s seventh of the season.
The Black Bears doubled their lead midway through the second period as junior defender Ashley Norum found sophomore forward Brittany Dougherty for UMaine’s second goal.
Junior forward Myriam Croussette would put the game out of reach for the Purple Eagles with the third Black Bear goal of the second period.
The Purple Eagles added a goal in the third period, bringing the final score to 3-1.
Sophomore goalie Brittany Ott played well between the pipes, stopping 18 Niagara chances.
The Purple Eagles came out determined in the second contest, scoring just under four minutes in to gain the early lead. Niagara doubled their lead eight minutes later when two freshmen forwards, Jessica Hitchcock and Jenna Hendrikx teamed up for the goal.
Black Bears’ junior forward Dawn Sullivan would put UMaine on the board early in the second period with her first goal of the season. Norum and Dougherty assisted on the goal, bringing the score 2-1 in favor of the Purple Eagles.
Just two minutes later, Niagara would increase their lead back to two, where it would stay until the final buzzer.
The Black Bears controlled the majority of chances in the loss, outshooting the Purple Eagles 26-17 and 50-36.
The Black Bears have a week off before traveling to Mansfield to take on the University of Connecticut on Nov. 6.
