The University of Maine field hockey team dropped the season finale game to Boston University Saturday in overtime. 2-1. The loss brought the Black Bears to 13-5 and 2-3 in America East Conference play, while the Terriers improved to 10-7 and 3-2.

The result had playoff implications, with the Terriers gaining the three-seed in conference playoffs while the Black Bears and their superior record had to settle for the fourth seed.

Junior forward Kelly Newton added to her team-leading goal total, scoring her 18th of the season to give the Black Bears the 1-0 lead late in the first half. The goal also brought Newton’s point total on the season to 43, bringing her closer to the school record for points in a season.

The Black Bears commanded the majority of the game, but lost the lead with just 1:25 remaining. Forward Andrea Greene tipped the ball past junior goalie Brittany Fleck on the corner to tie it up at 1-1.

The Terriers found the cage for the win just 1:25 into overtime, as defender Jacinda McLeod scored off of the penalty corner.

The Black Bears next game is against top-seed University of New Hampshire Friday, Nov. 5 in Durham, N.H.
