UMaine men’s hockey upends Catamounts

The University of Maine men’s hockey team made it three wins in a row, beating the University of Vermont on Halloween Eve in overtime 3-2. The victory brought the Black Bears’ record to 4-1-2 on the season, while the Catamounts remained winless at 0-2-2.

After a scoreless first period, the Black Bears struck first on their first power play of the second period when senior center Tanner House went top shelf on Catamount goalie Rob Madore, off passes from senior forward Robby Dee and junior forward Gustav Nyquist.

Vermont got the equalizer 10 minutes later when forward Wahsontiio Stacey scored on the power play opportunity.

Power plays remained critical through the remainder of the period, with UMaine’s second goal coming with just .8 seconds remaining. Junior forward Spencer Abbott fired off a shot, which was deflected to Nyquist, who found Dee for his fifth goal of the season.

The Catamounts capitalized on another Black Bear mistake, tying the game in the third period on a two-man advantage. Forward Jack Downing put in the equalizer, off assists by defenders Drew MacKenzie and Nick Bruneteau.

The score remained at 2-2 at the end of the third period, but didn’t stay that way for long in overtime. Just 2:16 into the extra period, Abbott scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season on a breakaway against Madore. Nyquist picked up his team-leading 10th assist, and senior defender Josh Van Dyk grabbed an assist as well.

Freshman goalie Dan Sullivan picked up the victory, his second of the season. He corralled 23 shots, as the Black Bears outshot the Catamounts 42-25.

Abbott’s three points on the day brings his season total to 13, good for fourth in the country. Nyquist is tied for seventh with 12 points on the season.

The Black Bears continue Hockey East play Nov. 6, traveling south to take on Boston University.
