Women’s ball falls to Holy Cross, 79-69

The University of Maine women’s basketball team couldn’t stop their losing streak, falling to 1-6 after a loss to the College of Holy Cross, 79-69.

The Crusaders improved to .500 on the year at 4-4, while the Black Bears won in most statistical categories.

UMaine shot more than 50 percent from the field, out-rebounded the Crusaders and had more points off turnovers, second chance points and bench points. However, a late scoring drought by the Black Bears was all Holy Cross needed to leap out to a double-digit lead late in the game.

After opening free throws by sophomore forward Brittany Williams, freshman Amber Smith went off with five points in the first three minutes. Smith finished with 11 points and nine rebounds. The Crusaders countered with an eight-point run, giving Holy Cross their first lead of the game.

Holy Cross senior forward Whitney Fremeau tied the game in the last second of the first half, 39-39. It was the most points the Black Bears have scored through one half this season. Eight Black Bears registered points in the first half.

The Crusaders hit a quick three to break the tie early in the second half, but the Black Bears regained the lead off back-to-back baskets by sophomore guard Katelyn Vanderhoff. She finished with a career-high 17 points on 8-13 shooting. She was one rebound away from a double-double.

Senior guard Tanna Ross connected on back-to-back threes to give the Black Bears a 57-55 lead with under 11 minutes to play. The Crusaders took the lead again 60-59 with seven-and-a-half minutes remaining, and would not relinquish it for the rest of the game.

Ross finished with 10 points, while freshmen guard Ashleigh Roberts and forward Jaymie Druding added nine each.

The Black Bears travel for two games in Pennsylvania next weekend, taking on the University of Pennsylvania on Friday, Dec. 10 and Penn State on Sunday, Dec. 12.
