For the second-straight weekend, the University of Maine men’s hockey team swept a team ranked in the top-five in the country.
The Black Bears finished off their sweep of No. 2 Boston University in Agganis Arena Saturday night by the score of 3-1. Junior defender Nick Pryor scored the game-winner in the second period, his first collegiate goal. Freshman forward John Parker scored for the second consecutive night and junior forward Matt Mangene added an empty-netter.
The Black Bears improve to 14-8-3 and 11-7-2 in Hockey East, while the Terriers fall to 15-8-1 and 12-6-1 in conference.
Parker put the Black Bears on top with just 6 seconds remaining in the first period, off assists from fellow freshman forward Connor Leen and junior defender Mark Nemec.
BU sophomore defender Garrett Noonan tied it up early in the second period on the power play, only to have Pryor take a pass from junior forward Joey Diamond and beat BU senior goalie Kieran Millan.
The Terriers had a chance late in the third period while on the power play to tie the game, but UMaine sophomore goalie Dan Sullivan held strong and kept BU out. Mangene scored on a power play at the end of the game after BU pulled its goalie.
The Black Bears welcome the University of Alabama-Huntsville to Alfond Arena next weekend in some rare late-season out-of-conference hockey. The series starts Friday at 7 p.m.
