" they charged the fraternity with hazing because the pledges had to wear a tie when nobody else did, and were also forced to refrain from alcohol and television during their pledge week, so that they may focus on the importance of school and becoming a brother. When did acting as a model student/member of society become punishable?"

It's punishable because it's against the law. Forcing someone to conform to behaviors or standards to join a group, however well-intentioned, is a direct violation of Maine and federal law.

Don't take my word for it. Look it up.

The way the University handled this was disgraceful. The two girls were 18 and 17 years old, and were allowed to be in the house by a couple of freshmen candidates (Yes also 18 years old).

The University did an "investigation" determined us guilty, and gave us 48 hours to move all of our items out, with a month left of school. Now as the facts continue to be revealed, the school refuses to overturn the decision. Of course a proper investigation initially wouldn't have provided the school with grounds to evict the members.

As soon as the original story broke, I knew they were swatting a fly with a bazooka to get as far away from this incident as possible. Now that the original charge is baseless, when will we see it reported on the news?

Never. Because the University will look like even bigger idiots than before.

This article says Sigma Nu didn't give the girls alcohol, obviously they aren't friends.

I like the way you think, Bob. Bear in mind the name of the game these days is avoiding liability. In this litigious society, the university is terrified of being sued by overzealous parents who never taught their kids how to act responsibly. So, as you now know, UMO is swift in taking action, regardless of whether or not the punishment fits the crime. It's a spin machine, and they will spin it in whichever direction is away from them, at all cost. And you are also correct about them setting their sights on the house - they want all that riverfront property, upon which sits eleven of the fourteen fraternity houses on campus - in hopes of developing it one day for hotels and retail buildings. I'm quite passionate about preserving the Greek life on the UMO campus, and if you can't already tell, my blood is boiling over the way they treat us!

'Dana added that he couldn’t “speculate on what the committee might have seen or heard about or how they responded.'

This is, without a doubt, the most laughable sentence in the article. Why doesn't he just ask the Conduct Committee how they responded? Doesn't the position of "Vice President of Student Affairs" have any juice? Apparently not.

I sent the good Dean a lengthy email yesterday to convey my disgust with the University's handling of this situation, and to inform him that my wife and I will no longer be sending our annual donation.

I also brought to his attention that this will be the last time an ambulance is called to a fraternity house to take care of an overly intoxicated minor, who illegally entered the premises. From now on, they will be tossed out to fend for themselves on University property. Nice lawsuit there, eh?

Here's the thing - this administration is hellbent on hanging Greeks out to dry. A few years ago, they created a media frenzy when one of our undergrads went missing the morning of his initiation. They said it was a hazing prank gone bad, which couldn't have been further from the truth. When they 'investigated' (which consisted of a hearing without Sigma Chi), they charged the fraternity with hazing because the pledges had to wear a tie when nobody else did, and were also forced to refrain from alcohol and television during their pledge week, so that they may focus on the importance of school and becoming a brother. When did acting as a model student/member of society become punishable? This mentality is so backwards, it's a wonder there is still a Greek system in place. I hope to someday see a Greek Alumni group take charge and provide some oversight and accountability to this administration. If I thought enough alums cared I'd put one together myself.

"Now, the fraternity is wondering why, after an appeal to the Student Conduct Code Committee resulted in three of seven charges of violations against Sigma Nu being dropped — including the violation indicting them with providing the females with alcohol — the 5-year ban stands."

Please re-read this paragraph from the article. It was determined that Sigma Nu did not provide them with alcohol.

Now to question your point.

For what "dangerous behavior" should the brothers be held accountable? Calling an ambulance?
