Two incoming freshmen for the University of Maine hockey team were drafted in the 2012 NHL Draft, held in Pittsburgh, Pa. on Saturday and Sunday.
Freshman forward Devin Shore was selected in the second round, 61st overall by the Dallas Stars, while freshman defender Ben Hutton was selected in the fifth round, 147th overall by the Vancouver Canucks.
Shore, a 6-foot-4-inch forward, scored 36 goals and added 54 assists in 64 games for the Whitby Fury of the Ontario Junior Hockey League.
Hutton, who was a member of the Napean Raiders of the Central Canadian Hockey League before committing to UMaine.
“We are very excited that Devin and Ben were selected in this year’s NHL Draft.,” UMaine men’s hockey head coach Tim Whitehead wrote in an email. “They will have a great opportunity to grow and develop here at Maine, and eventually sign with Dallas and Vancouver to begin their professional careers.
“I anticipate that Devin and Ben will contribute right away as freshmen, and they both have the potential to expand their ice time and play in all situations, including power play and penalty kill,” Whitehead wrote.
Both freshmen are expected to join the Black Bears in the fall.
