As a first year honors student, I had only had a few encounters with Dr. Slavin. Those few encounters were enough to paint a picture of his huge personality, his drive, and the love he invested in building brighter futures for his students in the honors college. I always saw him around campus, starting up conversations with students and faculty, and just enjoying the company of who he was around. Not knowing him personally, but being able to gather all that from just a few encounters must mean he was a truly special guy.

It was exactly a decade ago when I first met Dr Charlie Slavin, he was a very humble man who passionately and patiently mentored me several hours every afternoon teaching me abstract and complex mathematical concepts. The entire University of Maine family will greatly miss him.

Charlie was my thesis advisor and graduate professor during my work on my Master's from September 1988 - December 1990. He was a great mathematician, teacher, and mentor. I am saddened to hear of his passing and know that he will be sorely missed at the University of Maine.
