The University of Maine women’s basketball team fell to 1-5 after losing a 74-58 decision at home to Virginia Commonwealth University.
VCU quickly obtained an 11-point lead before the Black Bears started their comeback. The run by UMaine brought the Black Bears to within six midway through the first half.
The Rams countered with a 17-6 run in 4 minutes, which resulted in what was their largest lead of the game at 18. UMaine freshman guard Brittany Wells closed the first half with seven straight points to bring the Black Bears within 11. A jumper by senior forward Corinne Wellington at the buzzer put UMaine down 10 at the half.
Wells led the Black Bears in points at the half with 12 on 5-for-9 shooting including a couple 3-pointers. UMaine shot 38.9 percent from the field in the opening half while the VCU shot 45.5 percent.
The Rams started the second half with a bucket before the Black Bears went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to six. Sophomore forward Danielle Walczak started the run for UMaine with a layup followed by a pair of free throws by junior guard Ashleigh Roberts. Freshman center Anna Heise then got a steal for the Black Bears and scored off an assist from Walczak. After the Rams got a quick score, freshman forward Liz Wood hit a 3-pointer to put the deficit at just five for the Black Bears.
After a VCU timeout to stop the Black Bear run, the Rams responded with a 10-0 run to get the lead to 15.
The Rams extended the lead to 17 before sophomore guard Courtney Anderson hit a three to cut the lead to 14 for UMaine.
The Black Bears got the lead down to 13 but eventually time caught up with them as the Rams won 74-58.
Wells led the Black Bears in scoring with 14 points and went 2-for-5 from beyond the arc. Wood added nine points and four rebounds for UMaine, while Walczac scored eight and grabbed five rebounds.
VCU had four players in double figures, led by junior guard Robyn Parks with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Junior guard Zakia Williams added 16 points and freshman guard Kaneisha Atwater and freshman forward Janniina Koivunen each scored 11.
UMaine plays Saturday, Dec. 1 on the road against Florida Gulf Coast University.
