Police were called to investigate a report of two intoxicated people in the Stodder Parking Lot at 11:55 p.m. April 16. A male, Kevin Donohue, 20, Orono, had a cut on his arm. Police are unsure if he received the injury from falling or from some other incident. He was charged with possession of alcohol by a minor by consumption and transported to Saint Joseph Hospital for his injuries and extreme intoxication. The female, Sarah Sullivan, 19, was also charged with possession of alcohol by a minor by consumption and escorted back to her room. At about the same time, police received a report of vandalism to a vehicle in the parking lot; the side mirror had been broken. Police are investigating to see if these cases are related.

In it together

Officers patrolling Hilltop Parking Lot detected the odor of burning marijuana that led them to a parked vehicle at 4:55 a.m. April 20. They observed six people smoking marijuana inside and asked them to exit the vehicle while they searched the inside for drugs and paraphernalia. Officer found several marijuana cigarettes and two small bags of marijuana, containing approximately .5 oz. of marijuana total. All six people claimed responsibility for the marijuana.
Rum running

Officers were directed to Cumberland Hall to interview students at 3:33 a.m. April 18. During the investigation, an officer found four underage people and a bottle of rum inside a room. The room resident, Dehvin Trussell, 20, claimed ownership of the alcohol and was charged with possession of alcohol by a minor. Two students were referred to Judicial Affairs. One non-student was not charged.

Smoke signals to beer

In his backpack, they found four cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon. He was identified and charged with possession of alcohol by a minor.

Oxford interception

A Resident Assistant of Oxford Hall intercepted four people carrying two bottles of Mike’s Hard Lemonade and called police to the scene at 1:20 a.m. April 18. No one took ownership of the alcohol, but the two residents of the group admitted to drinking alcohol and showed signs of intoxication.

Bad week for Wranglers

A Jeep Wrangler parked in the Steam Plant Parking Lot was burglarized sometime between March 20 and 26. The rear canvas top was unzipped at the back and someone entered the vehicle, removing $75 from the glove compartment. The case is under investigation. A second Jeep Wrangler soft-top was slashed open while parked in the Hilltop Lot from March 25 to 26. The owner reported the incident at 5:04 p.m. March 26. An interior panel was also slashed. The total damage was estimated at $500. No items were reported stolen.

Locked and lost

A men’s mountain bike spray-painted blue and silver was stolen from the Gannett Hall bike rack sometime between 9 a.m. March 25 and 3:30 p.m. March 26. The lock was cut from the bike, which had an estimated value of $100. The case is under investigation.

Stolen stereo

A student reported that someone unlocked her vehicle parked in the Hilltop Lot, entered it and stole the stereo from her dashboard sometime between 7 p.m. March 28 and 9:30 a.m. March 29. The stereo is estimated at $200.

Illegal rearrangement

A student called police to report that someone had entered her vehicle and rearranged personal items in her glove compartment sometime between 1:45-3:45 p.m. March 27 while the vehicle was parked in the Belgrade Lot. It was not a forced entry and no items were reported stolen.

Detrimental dishwashing

A student’s iPod was stolen during the five minutes he stepped out of his room to wash dishes in the bathroom on the first floor of Cumberland Hall on March 27. He said he does not know who stole it. The iPod is valued at $200.

Spotted

A group of students walking at the intersection of Long Road and Rangeley Road advised officers on patrol at 8:32 p.m. March 26 that someone was operating a vehicle traveling on Rangeley Road without a driver’s license. The students pointed to a vehicle traveling within eyesight. Officers followed and pulled over the vehicle, identifying the driver as Erica Clark, 19, Orono. She did not have a license and was issued a summons for operating a vehicle without a license.

Harmful words

Police received report of graffiti on a second-floor room door of Oxford Hall at 4:20 p.m. March 26. “Fat Asses” had been written in black marker. Custodial staff responded to clean it. The case is under investigation.

The officer approached and could smell marijuana and referred the subjects to Judicial Affairs.

Oxford Hall call

An RA smelled marijuana on the second floor of Oxford Hall and called police at 1:23 a.m. March 27. Officers responded to the room in question. The people were no longer in the room, but officers found them in the first-floor lounge area. Officers confiscated a small amount of alcohol from the group. Only one of the three students appeared intoxicated. He was identified as Quintan Morgan-Drain, 18, Orono. He said he had not been drinking, but officers determined with a field sobriety test that he was intoxicated. He was charged with possession of liquor by a minor.

You know where it went

An RA reported possible use of marijuana on the first floor of Aroostook Hall at 11:58 a.m. March 27. Police responded and spoke with four people in the room in question. They all admitted to smoking but no marijuana or contraband was found. They were referred to Judicial Affairs.

The resident told officers he had smoked an hour earlier, but he did not have any contraband on him. He was referred to Judicial Affairs.

That’s not my name

An officer traveling on Flagstaff Road observed a male stumbling outside Murray Hall at 1:26 a.m. March 28 and decided to have a look. He approached the male and detected the smell of an intoxicating beverage. At first, the male gave him a false name and date of birth. He was then correctly identified as non-student Travis Quint, 19, who was visiting a friend in Gannett Hall. Quint was charged with possession of alcohol by a minor by consumption.

A tricky situation

An officer on foot patrol on the fourth floor of Cumberland Hall found a noisy room and decided to investigate at 10:43 p.m. March 26. When the officer approached the door, he heard someone inside the room say, “Take a shot.” The officer knocked and resident Jacob Trickey, 19, answered the door. Police confiscated a partially full bottle of Captain Morgan Rum and a can of Natural Light. Trickey was charged with possession of alcohol by a minor. No others in the room were charged.

Denial is still going to get you sent to Judicial Affairs

Officers on foot patrol in Androscoggin Hall smelled burnt marijuana and narrowed the origin of the odor to a first-floor room at 11:38 p.m. March 26. The four people inside the room denied smoking, but officers observed signs of marijuana use in all of them. The resident would not consent to a room search and was referred to Judicial Affairs.

Lighting up on V-Day

A resident assistant of Penobscot Hall called police to report the smell of marijuana coming from a first-floor room at 11 p.m. Feb. 14. An officer responded and spoke with the resident. The resident, identified as Thomas Green, 19, indicated that he was possibly under the influence of drugs and handed over a pot pipe with burnt marijuana residue inside. He was charged with illegal possession of drug paraphernalia. One other person was in the room but was not charged.

An RA of Somerset Hall called police to report the smell of marijuana coming from a second-floor room at 12:16 a.m. Feb. 14. Two other people were in the room. They showed no signs of impairment and were not charged.

Minor mishap

An officer found an intoxicated female student in front of Kennebec Hall at 11:38 p.m. Feb. 13.

In camp chairs close to a woodstove, two Habitat for Humanity members sat on the University of Maine mall warming their hands. Behind them, through the door of a plywood and blue tarp shanty, four sleeping bags hung from the ceiling to dry from the frost that collected the previous night.

Habitat members slept in the shanty for three nights to raise awareness of and money to reduce substandard housing in the Bangor area in a fundraiser called Snow Place Like Home.

This year, the event raised a total of $1,290 — $970 from sponsors and $320 from donations on the mall — compared to last year’s total of $2,500.

“We’re collecting more [donations] on campus, but we got less from businesses,” said Amanda Missud, co-president of UMaine Habitat. She said the dip in business donations is partially due to the recession.

The funds will benefit a nonprofit Christian housing ministry that builds homes internationally and is planning to build a house on Fifth Street in Bangor.

Brenton Murray, Habitat’s advisor and graduate business administration student, walked up to the fire to talk with fellow Habitat members and was quickly finagled into giving out their massive supply of doughnuts, donated by Frank’s Catering.

“Free Doughnuts! Doughnuts with zero obligation! I’m going to start throwing them!” Murray called over the microphone during the 1 p.m. rush between classes. Some students laughed. Some approached for a pastry. Others walked by and tried to ignore him.

“This has actually been a lot better than expected. There were a few worrisome moments,” Murray said. “Every year we have a month to set up all of this.”

The organization spent a total of $20 to prepare for the event; everything else was donated, from the wood burned in the stove to the plywood to build the shanty.

“A lot of people come over and ask what’s going on,” said Missud, whose iPod was plugged into speakers provided by Campus Activities. A mix of upbeat songs from her workout playlist livened up the frozen mall.

On Monday night, four Habitat members sat by the fire until midnight, inviting passing students to sit with them and talk.

“By the time the library is closed and we can’t go to the bathroom anymore, we go to bed,” Missud said.

Three to four people slept in the shanty each night. On Monday, the organization’s mascot — an 8-month-old Basset Hound-Labrador mix named Oslow — nestled between the sleeping bags, adding essential bodyheat.

“It’s not bad. It’s out of the wind and the sleeping bags from Maine Bound are really nice,” Missud said. “It’s weird because you sleep with your pants on and everything, in your coat and jeans.”

Dana Buckley, a junior sociology student, awoke in the middle of the night to hear people outside the shanty debating whether anyone was really sleeping inside.

“We’ve had some critics, actually,” said Buckley, noting the negative comments from some readers of a Bangor Daily News article online.

“How can you be mad at students for sleeping outside in freezing weather for the good of the Greater Bangor area?” Missud said.

Members usually woke around 8 a.m. when they heard students walking by the shanty on their way to early classes. They took shifts during the day, sitting by the fire and asking passersby for donations.

The organization threw the first Snow Place Like Home event last year, and they plan to continue it as an annual fundraiser, with one change in the future.

“Next year we’ll have marshmallows,” Missud said.

Violence yields serious consequences

Officers responded to Penobscot Hall for report of assault and domestic violence at 2 a.m. Feb. 6. Police received a report that Adam Brown, 23, Orono, refused to leave the room of his ex-girlfriend and assaulted her male acquaintance. No serious injuries were reported. Police said Brown physically tried to prevent them from calling police. Brown was charged with assault, criminal trespass and obstructing report of a crime. Brown was on bail with conditions not to consume alcohol after being charged Nov. 28 with operating under the influence in Aroostook County. He had also been charged with OUI on Aug. 14. Police determined he had been drinking and charged him with violation of conditional release. He was arrested and transported to Penobscot County Jail.

Intoxicated taxi driver

A taxi driver drove off College Avenue and into a telephone pole, snapping it in half, at 11:48 p.m. Feb. 5. Officers arrived and identified the driver as Brian Hamm, 23, Old Town. He had no passengers. No serious injuries were reported and Hamm refused to go to the hospital. The front of the taxi had substantial damage. Police noticed impairment in his speech and called in a drug recognition expert from Old Town. Hamm was determined to be under the influence of drugs, arrested and charged with OUI and possession of scheduled drugs.

Stolen Giant

A student had his red and black Giant mountain bike locked to the Oxford Hall bike rack since Dec. 18 and noticed it had been stolen on Feb. 8. The bike is valued at $250. The case is under investigation.

Selective thievery

A student visiting a fraternity brother at Phi Gamma Kappa Feb. 6 had a debit card and identification card stolen from her purse. She reported the theft at 6:12 p.m. Feb. 9. The case is under investigation.

Kennebec marijuana bust

An officer responded to a report of the odor of marijuana on the first floor of Kennebec Hall on Feb. 8. He located James Nicolas, 19, inside his room and charged him with illegal possession of a useable amount of marijuana and illegal possession of drug paraphernalia. Nicolas cooperated and handed over a small amount of marijuana and a pipe. One other person was in the room but was not charged.

Six students drinking under age

Officers were dispatched to York Hall after a resident assistant called police to report underage drinking on the third floor at 12:31 a.m. Loud voices led officers to the suspected room. Three males and three females were inside drinking beer. The officers talked to several of the students and learned that one of them, Nicole Rose, 20, was currently on bail with a condition of release not to consume alcohol. Rose was arrested and charged with violating condition of release after a July 2 arrest in Cumberland County for possession of scheduled drugs. The remaining students, William Bolduc, 19; Katherine Bernard, 20; Renee Auger, 19; Jeffrey McCorkle, 19; and Cliff McCarthy, 19, were charged with illegal possession of liquor by a minor by consumption. Police confiscated the beer.

Stop right there

An officer answering a complaint at Orchard Trails was standing in the lobby of building nine when two males came walked in carrying open containers of Budweiser. One male, identified as Ryan Hegarty, 19, Massachusetts, started to run but stopped on the officer’s order. He was charged with possession of liquor by a minor and warned for drinking in public. The other male, identified as Scott Bouvier, 21, Orono, was warned for drinking in public.

Noisy gathering

Police received report of a possible family fight from a resident of Cassidy Lane who heard loud voices and sounds of items being thrown around from their neighbor’s apartment at 9:53 p.m. on Feb. 5. When officers arrived, they found a small gathering of four people in the apartment. Officers determined that residents Emily Francavilla, 20, and Meghan OBrien, 20, had been drinking. Both were charged with possession of alcohol by a minor by consumption and given a disorderly conduct warning.

(Handicapped) cat burglar

Police surrounded an abandoned house on Essex Street after receiving report that someone was inside the building with a flashlight at 7:56 p.m. Feb. 1. The officers secured the perimeter and could hear two males and a woman talking and walking back and forth inside. Officers then watched the three people walk out on the second-floor deck and throw a picnic table over the railing. It broke to pieces when it hit the ground. When the three people returned inside, officers caught bits of their conversation: one male was talking about a mirror and the other male said he would like to return to get the Fridgador. Then, one male said they had better get out of the house before the cops came. When the group exited the building, the police detained them and placed them in handcuffs until they could determine the danger of the situation. They identified the people as Glenn Young, 47, Orono; Brent Guay, 43, Orono and Angela Guay, 37, Orono.

All three had the strong odor of alcohol on their breath. Inside, officers found recently emptied bottles of Coors Light beer. The property was posted for no trespassing. Officers discovered their method of entry when they found a mangled meat fork on the ground by an open back door and markings on the doorframe. Brent and Angela Guay, husband and wife, said they were “looking for their handicapped cat,” which they saw enter the building. Both admitted to throwing the table. Police found two circuit breakers in Brent Guay’s pocket, and he admitted he had stolen them to use in his own house. Young said in an individual interview, “Look. We were there. We should not have been. What else do you want me to say?” He said he did not throw the table. The three were arrested and charged with burglary.

20 feet from the building?

An assistant community coordinator called Public Safety to report two males smoking marijuana outside York Hall at 9:50 p.m. on Feb. 1. They had been detained by the ACC by the time officers arrived. One of the males, non-student Thomas Sagona, 22, Camden, admitted to smoking marijuana and turned over a small bag of it. He was on campus visiting friends. The other male had not been smoking. Sagona was charged with possession of a useable amount of marijuana and will go to court in March.

The only card he wants is your ID

An Orono police officer was observing traffic entering and exiting the Big Apple parking lot when he became suspicious of underage transportation of liquor at 10 p.m. on Jan. 29. He saw a male run out of the store to a parked vehicle, open the passenger side door to speak with the driver and run back in the store. Soon after, he exited the store carrying two boxes of Coors Light beer and placed them in the back seat of the vehicle. The officer followed the vehicle and stopped it on Main Street. The driver was identified as Garret Williamson, 19, Orono. Williamson told the officer to call his father, who was a New Jersey state trooper. When he handed the officer his father’s card, the officer handed it back and told Williamson that he was an adult and could call his father himself. The alcohol was confiscated and Williamson was issued a summons for illegal transportation of liquor by a minor.

Get out of the taxi

An Orono police officer in street clothes was working an underage alcohol enforcement detail when he saw a “youthful male” enter a taxi carrying an 18-pack of Bud Light and an open bottle of Bud Light at 10:19 p.m. on Jan. 29 in front of building 11 in Orchard Trails. The officer approached and asked the male to step out of the taxi. At first, the male said he did not have ID on him, but then provided a Massachusetts license that identified him as Bradley Antenore, 20. The beer was confiscated, and the officer issued him a summons for illegal possession of liquor by a minor.

Oxford odors become misleading

A resident assistant reported the smell of marijuana coming from a third-floor room of Oxford Hall at 11:14 p.m. on Feb. 1. An officer responded to investigate and “detected a smell that was not marijuana.” He spoke with the room resident, who cooperated and gave consent to search the room. No marijuana was found.
