The university expects lower enrollment rates next year, as the economic downturn continues to affect students. This has forced Student Government to adjust its budget.

Vice President of Financial Affairs Justin Labonte presented the Student Government budget for fiscal year 2009-2010 during the April 7 General Student Senate meeting.

The Tobacco-Free Campus Initiative (TFCC) seems to be stuck in limbo, despite months of debate and effort.

Despite the controversy surrounding the potential smoking ban and the circulation of several surveys, the TFCC has yet to submit its report to University of Maine officials.

“We want to change the way wood is used right now,” Hemant Pendse, department chair of Chemical and Biological Engineering said at the General Student Senate meeting on March 31. Pendse discussed the University of Maine’s potential to be recognized internationally through wood, and the future of UMaine through new technology surrounding wood.

Several student organizations thanked the General Student Senate for sponsoring various club activities at Tuesday night’s meeting. Kappa Kappa Psi, the Ultimate Frisbee Team and the Nordic Ski Team expressed thanks to the senate for allocating money for trips and other club activities.

A lively session of the General Student Senate took place with a performance by the University Singers and a speech by University of Maine System Chancellor Richard Pattenaude, who answered questions regarding rising tuition, UMaine’s flagship identity, recruitment of potential students, FirstClass and the university’s future.

University of Maine President Robert Kennedy spoke to the General Student Senate at the Feb. 24 meeting. Kennedy discussed several topics including the chancellor’s Task Force, the Tobacco Free Campus Committee, renovations for academic buildings and the future of the university.

Debate arose over a $790 allocation for Club Canada’s trip to Montreal in the nearly four-hour General Student Senate meeting on Feb. 17. Club Canada modified its itinerary of the trip from the club’s last presentation to the senate to include a leadership conference.

Robert Dana talks about the importance of student involvement amidst the budget crisis

Vice President for Student Affairs Robert Dana spoke about the direction the campus was taking along with several projects to lift campus morale at the last General Student Senate meeting. Assistant Vice President for Student Entertainment Nate Wildes spoke on several topics discussed at the chancellor’s meeting on Feb. 9, which included a possible federal energy grant and the University of Maine System Task Force that will be evaluating university processes and consolidating departments like the IT.

The brothers of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) were welcomed back to campus on Monday evening as a university-recognized fraternity. SAE lost its charter more than three years ago due to alcohol-related violations and other actions that conflicted with police and views of Greek Life and the University of Maine.

University of Maine students offer their opinions on the inauguration, some who voted for President Barack Obama, and some who did not. The inauguration was screened at locations all over campus: in classrooms, the union, and at computers and TVs elsewhere across the university. One student interviewed made the trip to Washington D.C. to watch Obama take the oath of office in person.
