Drinking does not keep you warm. There is no such thing as a “beer jacket,” even though you might feel ready to trek back home from Woodman’s or the Bear Brew sans coat after tipping a few back. Be responsible. No one wants to dig you out of a snow bank. With that winter safety message, let’s start sippin’.

By Zach Dionne

This is college, and stress is in the air.

“It piles up, becomes one big mess,” said Jon Chellis, a junior music student who faced three dress rehearsals, three performances, two papers, two projects and work for two employers – all in one week.

Percy Clarke oversees UMaine's e-Sports arcade with 'a heart for students'
By Zach Dionne

Percy Clarke has been manager of the University of Maine’s e-Sports arcade since its inception in 2004, always conducting himself with amiability and a smile.

“To me, a quarter’s a quarter. If you lose one today, another one tomorrow, that’s 50 cents,” Percy said, sitting on a bench in the Memorial Union game spot. This is his domain, and this simple sentiment regarding the refund policy embodies his attitude toward his job: sweat the small stuff, pay attention to detail, serve the patrons.

UMaine's best-selling alumnus churns out fifth short fiction collection

Stephen King is wrongly deemed the master of horror and suspense on a daily basis. He’s the master of storytelling – he spins a yarn capable of reeling in even the most ambivalent readers, like flies to disgusting, sticky strips of chemical tape in the kitchen.

Scheduling a chat with Gretchen Gfeller at the University of Maine’s Fogler Library isn’t too tough -yet.

“Now that we’re a rock band, you’ll have to call our agent for the interview next semester,” she said, laughing. She’s referencing The Renewals, the library’s newest way to connect with students.

I love reading, but I’m not so sure about everything that comes with it. I take Stephen King’s mantra, “If you don’t have the time to read, you don’t have the tools to write,” and try to apply it to journalism. If I don’t have the time to read publications – if I struggle to get through a cotton-candy-light Entertainment Weekly in its titular timespan – how can I hope to write capably in the field?

So I decided to swear off fiction.

I’m driving to Boston. Alone. It’s dark, and I have directions printed from Google Maps. My options are to turn on the dome light and try to read while navigating the notorious city conditions or to simply wing it and get terribly lost.

By Zach Dionne

The Maine Center for the Arts isn’t being renovated; it’s being reborn. An $11 million re-imagining of the University of Maine’s cultural center will reach completion in the first week of 2009. A name change to the Collins Center for the Arts (CCA) will come in honor of a $5 million donation from UMaine graduates Richard and Anne Collins.
