On May 6, 2009, Maine became the fifth state in the country to allow gay marriage. Governor John Baldacci signed LD1020, An Act to End Discrimination in Civil Marriage and Affirm Religious Freedom, into law after the bill was approved by wide margins in both houses of the Maine Legislature.
