William P. Davis for The Maine Campus
On May 6, 2009, Maine became the fifth state in the country to allow gay marriage. Governor John Baldacci signed LD1020, An Act to End Discrimination in Civil Marriage and Affirm Religious Freedom, into law after the bill was approved by wide margins in both houses of the Maine Legislature. An effort to overturn the bill by citizen's veto was quickly mounted. The referendum, which appeared on the 2009 ballot, attracted national attention, and was ultimately approved by a vote of 53 percent to 47 percent, making Maine the 31st state to reject same-sex marriage by popular vote.
