On Nov. 7, the University of Maine Field hockey team won 4-3 against the University of California (UC), Davis Aggies in the America East quarterfinals. The tournament was played at the University of Albany.
UMaine ended its regular season with a record of 10-8 after winning against the University of New Hampshire. UC Davis entered the contest with a record of 4-12. Both teams looked to continue in the tournament.
In the first quarter, the Black Bears took control quickly. In the 10th minute, Maine got the first penalty corner of the game. Maine was unable to score off this attempt but continued to dominate the quarter. The quarter ended scoreless.
One minute into the second quarter, the Aggies’ second-year forward Katie Kim scored first, with a goal off a rebound. Three minutes after the Aggie goal, Maine got a penalty corner and scored. Third-year midfielder Oliva Geniti got her ninth goal of the season.
Three minutes after the first Maine goal, another was scored by fifth-year midfielder Micaela Grajales, marking her ninth goal of the season.
Two minutes after the goal by Grajales, first-year defender Jamie Dempsey scored for the Aggies. The game was tied, 2-2.
UC Davis got their first penalty corner with a minute remaining in the second quarter. The shot was blocked by second year goalie Jayde Temby. With another two penalty corners served by UC Davis, there were another two saves for Temby.
Going into the third quarter, graduate student Rozarie Mrazova went into goal for Maine. Two minutes into the quarter, fourth-year back Poppy Lambert took a penalty stroke and scored her eighth goal of the season. Lambert now holds the record for all-time leading scorer for UMaine field hockey. It was her eighth of the season, and 58th career goal.
Three minutes after Maine’s goal, Geniti got a green card. A minute into this green card penalty, Lambert got a yellow card. Even though they were down two players, Maine still held control of the game.
UC Davis got a penalty corner and fourth-year defender Zoe Mohrman scored the goal, assisted by second-year forward Ella Franken and fourth-year forward Audrey Lee.
With four minutes left in the quarter, there was a yellow card on Aggie fourth-year forward, Skylar Richards. The quarter ended tied at three.
Two minutes into the fourth quarter, Maine got four penalty corners, and on the last one, Maine scored. The eventual game-winning-goal was by third-year forward Kate Richardson for her 6th of the season, and was assisted by Lambert.
With four minutes left in the game, the Aggies got a penalty corner but no goal was scored. UC Davis pulled their goalie to try to tie the game. The game ended with Maine moving on to play New Hampshire in the semifinals.
