On Nov. 21, the University of Maine’s women’s basketball team lost to the Boston University (BU) Terriers, 67-57. UMaine entered the game 2-2, coming off a loss to Harvard University. BU looked to bounce back after losing against the University of New Hampshire.
In the first quarter, fourth-year BU guard Alex Giannaros opened the scoring with a three-pointer. Maine quickly followed with a three-pointer by fifth-year guard Olivia Rockwood, assisted by third-year guard Sarah Talon. Giannaros responded with a layup. Rockwood, assisted by fifth-year guard Caroline Bornemann, scored another three.
Third-year guard Asta Blauenfeldt, assisted by Talon, shot a three and Maine was leading 9 to 5. Blauenfeldt follows up with a layup, continuing to build up the lead. Second-year forward Caroline Dotsey joins in getting a layup to grow the Black Bear lead to 13 to 5.
The Terriers quickly fought back with three minutes remaining. A three shot was made by second-year guard Audrey Erickson, assisted by second-year guard Aoibhe Gormley. First-year forward Allison Schwertner added on with a free throw. Talon answers with a good jumper and two free throws by Blauenfeldt to end the quarter 21 to 11.
In the second quarter, Terrier second-year guard Bella McLaughlin opened the quarter with a layup. A minute later, Blauenfeldt responded with a layup. Giannaros scored a jumper followed by Talon shooting a layup, and Maine still led by 10.
Schwertner scored a layup, assisted by Giannaros. A minute later, Schwertner shot free throws and scored a tip in to cut the lead to four, then Giannaros knocked down a three. Blauenfeldt responded with a layup. Schwertner then drained a three, tying the game at 27, and BU eventually led by two at the half.
In the third quarter, fourth-year guard Paula Gallego immediately tied the game for the Black Bears. Schwertner and Giannaros responded with layups. The Terriers started to build a lead as McLaughlin joined the scoring with a layup. Talon ended Maine’s scoring drought with two free throws after a Terrier foul.
With four minutes remaining in the quarter, Bornemann scored a tip-in. First-year guard Hil Gunnsteinsdóttir responded with a layup for the Terriers. Blaunfeldt quickly responded with a three, before Gunnsteinsdóttir hit a three of her own. Schwertner got two free throws, which put the Terriers up by 11. The quarter ended with BU leading Maine 49-41.
A minute into the fourth quarter, McLaughlin opened the back-and-forth scoring with a three-pointer assisted by Giannaros. Bornemann responded with a layup assisted by Blaunfeldt before Schwertner and Giannaros teamed up for another layup. Blaunfeldt then shot a three-pointer, assisted by Rockwood.
Two minutes later, Bornemann took two free throws, missing one and making the other. Seconds later, Blaunfeldt shot a layup, leaving Maine down by five. Fouls on the Black Bears gave the Terriers two more sets of free throws.
Seconds later, Talon made a three, bringing the point deficit down to five. BU answers with a good jumper by Giannaros. Another foul by the Black Bears, McLaughlin misses one and scores one. Seconds later, Rockwood scored another three.
Maine took two fouls, and BU was leading by 10. Blaunfeldt scored a layup, Maine only being down by eight. In the last 17 seconds of the game, the Black Bears took another foul. Despite the effort all game, the Black Bears lost 67-57. Blaunfeldt led the Black Bears with 24 points, while Schwertner led the Terriers with 21.
