Barack Obama is the 44th and current President of the United States. He is the first African American to be elected to the office. Obama served as U.S. senator representing Illinois until his election in November, 2008.

Obama is a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he was the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review. Before his career in politics Obama was a community organizer, civil rights attorney and law professor at the University of Chicago Law School.

Obama announced his candidacy for president in February, 2007. His closest competitor in the primaries was Hillary Clinton, although he surpassed her delegate count on Super Tuesday and she never bounced back. Obama and his running mate, Joe Biden, competed against Republican John McCain and his running mate, Sarah Palin, in the general election, which Obama won with 53 percent of the popular vote and 365 of 538 electors. He was inaugurated on January 20, 2009.
