University Climate Change Institute to recommend economic opportunities and changes to preserve Maine by late next year

Maine Gov. John Baldacci has asked for a Maine Climate Change Assessment from scientists at the University of Maine. Researchers in UMaine’s Climate Change Institute will lead the study.

“We are pleased to have this assignment from the Governor, and we feel that it’s very appropriate in our role as a land and sea grant campus,” George Jacobson of the Climate Change Institute said.

Baldacci plans to give system $14.4 million in additional funds

Over the next week, Maine legislators will begin considering Governor John Baldacci’s proposed $14.4 million budget increase for the University of Maine System over the 2007-08 and 2008-09 fiscal years. According to university officials, the extra money will help but it won’t be enough to make up for years of state underfunding.

The University of Maine’s student political groups are running at full steam, and the College Democrats are no exception. The group is stepping up efforts, including canvassing and literature drops, as the Nov. 7 Election Day draws near.

In an election year where Maine’s attention is centered around the Taxpayer Bill of Rights and a close gubernatorial race, the College Democrats are pushing candidates and issues rather than the party.

Maine Governor John Baldacci chatted with students at Hancock Hall Tuesday night. Baldacci and state Representative Emily Cain, D-Orono, spoke to students about Question 1, a referendum concerning sexual orientation, on next Tuesday’s ballot.

Cain and Baldacci both spoke in support of the “No on 1″ campaign, led on campus by Sarah Bigney, a junior international affairs major.

On Feb. 9, Governor John E. Baldacci released the details for his 2006-07 $197 million proposed bond package for the state of Maine. The bond must now be reviewed by the Legislature. Baldacci said if the bond passes it will lead to much-needed investments in job creation, infrastructure, the Land for Maine’s Future program, clean water, the environment and education.

A 1986 graduate of UMaine, Baldacci will speak to nearly 1,800 people expected to receive degrees, including 35 who have earned doctorates.
