December holidays are paving the way to the new year

The holiday season is a time filled with love, holiday recipes and cheer. It is a time to relax, wind down from a busy semester and get ready to spend time with family and friends (socially distanced, of course). Although Christmas and the new year are fast approaching, there are still many holidays worth celebrating in the next few weeks leading up to them.

Monday, Dec. 7: National Letter Writing Day

National Letter Writing Day kicks off the week with a reminder to send thoughtful messages to family and friends. The holidays are all about reconnecting with loved ones and showing them how much you appreciate them, and what better way to do that than by writing a letter? Writing is a way to relieve stress, get your thoughts down on paper, and reconnect with yourself and who you are. Send a letter to your friends, parents, grandparents or even get a head start on writing your holiday or New Year’s cards! Other ways to celebrate the holidays could include writing letters to troops stationed overseas, sending emails or texts to people you haven’t seen in a while or writing notes to senior citizens in local nursing homes. There are so many ways to celebrate this day, so get writing!

Tuesday, Dec. 8: National Brownie Day

Next up on the calendar is National Brownie Day. Who doesn’t love a good brownie? Use this day to surprise your roommates with a tasty dessert or to bake together and remind them how much they mean to you. December is all about spending time with loved ones and completing holiday traditions, so why not make baking brownies a new one? You can visit your local grocery store and pick up a quick bag of Betty Crocker Brownie Mix, or you could get creative and find a homemade recipe online! You could also spice things up by adding colored icing, sprinkles or other fun notes onto the brownies. Happy baking!

Wednesday, Dec. 9: National Llama Day

National Llama Day is a great holiday to add some fun and excitement to that mid-week slump. Llamas are one of the funniest and most interesting animals on the planet, so this day is for them. Stop by your local Target or Walmart and pick up a Llama sweater or grab a plain sweatshirt and make your own. You can even kick back and put on “The Emperor’s New Groove,” an animated Disney classic about a young emperor who gets transformed into a llama. Spend time with friends and make them laugh today by reciting a llama joke or sending them a funny llama GIF.

Thursday, Dec. 10: Hanukkah

Also known as the “Festival of Lights,” Hanukkah, is a Jewish holiday celebrated around the world. The first night of Hanukkah begins the evening of Dec. 10, a time for celebration and tradition all over the world. Even if you aren’t part of the Jewish religion, you can still celebrate in your own way and make the week special and meaningful. Hanukkah runs until Dec. 18, and each day brings with it special traditions. Ways to celebrate include lighting a menorah, attending a religious ceremony, making traditional foods and exchanging gifts. Use this week to do something nice for others every day; a small act of kindness never goes unnoticed.

Friday, Dec. 11: Christmas Jumper Day

It’s Christmas Jumper Day! What better excuse to run to Target and pick out matching pajamas with your bestie? Your Christmas jumper could be a sweater, dress, onesie, pajama set or anything festive and cozy to celebrate the season. To take things to the next level, you could celebrate the holiday by hosting a pajama party or a Christmas Jumper contest! Whoever has the most festive, unique jumper gets to be the first one to put an ornament on the tree. Have fun with this holiday, and celebrate it to get your weekend off to a great start.
