Spring Greek Life

Spring Greek Life

As we all re-adjust to college life after the long break, the vibrant rush of campus life resumes as if it never stopped. A part of the rush is spring recruitment for sororities and fraternities. The process may be referred to as continuous ongoing bidding, or “COB,” for sororities which just means that the recruitment period has been extended in hopes of recruiting a few more pledges.

A great way is through the University of Maine Panhellenic’s Instagram page. They have provided a continuous ongoing bidding interest form in their page’s bio. Numerous fraternities are also actively participating in spring rush. Nearly every fraternity participates in spring rush as  a great way to reach out and meet new people. The UMaine InterFraternity Council Instagram page has posted a flier for every chapter participating and their different events going on. This is a great opportunity for potential new members to get to know a chapter and its members more. Some events may include watching a sports game, game nights and many different opportunities to eat some good food and meet new people.

Why should you join Greek life? Some may be wondering why they would feel compelled to join a Greek organization, and that is a great question. There are many great ways to get involved on campus and Greek life happens to be a very popular and an effective way to do just that. Different chapters represent different values and missions, so there is an opportunity for those interested to find others who are interested in the same topics as them. Each chapter also has an active philanthropy that each member participates in and helps raise money for. Not only that, but working together towards a common goal with your fellow members can be empowering and bring a chapter closer together.

Every chapter is also held to high academic and moral standards that can shed a positive light on their organization and also help embody their chapter values. It is a great way to help keep yourself on track in college and have people to hold you accountable when it may be hard to hold yourself accountable. There is always someone willing to help and provide support.

Some sorority chapters have also been active in the Memorial Union at tables near the UMaine bookstore. There are many ways to reach out and see if Greek life may be right for you and which chapter may suit you. It is highly encouraged to give it a shot!

Alpha Omicron Pi is a sorority chapter that is currently having a great impact on the local community. They are doing a drive for feminine products that will be donated to the Bangor

Homeless Shelter in hopes to have an impact on ending period poverty. Period poverty affects more than 1.25 billion women, which means that they don’t have access to safe menstrual cycle products. In addition, about 14% of college women experience period poverty. Every woman has a natural human right to have safe and effective products during their menstrual cycles. Alpha Omicron Pi is accepting monetary donations through venmo, feminine product donations and orders from their Amazon Wishlist that will all go towards the women affected and the Bangor Homeless Shelter.

There will be many more philanthropy events coming up this spring, so keep an eye out because they are a great way to have an impact on the community around you. If interested in Greek life, there is also the option to simply Google the UMaine sorority or fraternity life page and there will be detailed instructions and information on how to join or get involved. Additionally, there are contacts provided if there are further questions or concerns.
