Super Bowl LVIII live coverage

An unbelievable game ends in heartbreak for the 49ers, and the dynasty for the Chiefs has officially begun. 25-22 is your final!

10:45 p.m. Pacheco catches another screen, and it’s third and inches from the SF31. Mahomes steps up in the pocket and is inside the SF15! 1st and 10 from the SF13.

10:43 p.m. Pacheco catches a dump-off for 4 yards. 49er’s timeout. 2nd and 6 from the SF37.

10:41 p.m. The 49ers sell out and Rice gets a drag route for 13 yards into 49er territory.

10:39 p.m. Mahomes, on a read option, moves the chains and keeps the NFL season alive. This game is a classic. Valdes-Scantling loses 3 yards on a boneheaded play. They go right back home and grab 8 yards. It’s 3rd and 6.

10:37 p.m. Pacheco starts out for a gain of 3. Rashee Rice knifes his way for 6. It’s 3rd and 1. Pacheco goes nowhere. 4th and 1. The Super Bowl is on the line.

10:33 p.m. A big first down and a tote to McCaffrey, and the 49ers are inside the 10. Two runs by McCaffrey set up 3rd and 4. A busted pressure will set up a field goal opportunity for Moody. The kick is good. Moody gives the 49ers a 22-19 lead. It’s on Mahomes and the Chiefs to get 3 or more points to win Super Bowl LVIII.

10:30 p.m. Another 7 for McCaffrey, and the 49ers are in the red zone. A holding call pushes the 49ers back to make it 2nd and 12.

10:29 p.m. McCaffrey gets 4 yards. Another touch for McCaffrey moves the rock to the 25-yard line of KC.

10:27 p.m. McCaffrey grabs 3 yards to get out to the SF28. Another tote to McCaffrey gets 4, and it’s 3rd and 3. Aiyuk is able to haul in a reception to move the sticks towards midfield.

10:23 p.m. The first play is incomplete over the middle. A false start pushes the 49ers back to 2nd and 15. A pitch play to McCaffrey gets 2 yards. 3rd and 13. The pass is incomplete, but a holding keeps the drive alive.

10:19 p.m. Both teams will get the ball. The 49ers will possess it first.

10:16 p.m. Incomplete to Kelce. Butker to tie this one and send it to OT. The 29-yarder… is good. 3 seconds left before the inevitable OT.

10:15 p.m. The intensity is unreal. 10 seconds left. 3 point lead, one timeout.

10:13 p.m. Mahomes only gets a couple and the lock is winding. 3rd and 7. 16 seconds left. Kelce gets a huge gain. Kelce gets a huge gain inside the 10! It’s 1st and goal with 10 seconds left!

10:08 p.m. Here we go. Mahomes with a chance to cement his legacy and create a dynasty. This will move fast, Kelce gets 10. Mahomes scampers for 2. 2nd and 8. 1:32 to go. Noah Gray grabs 12 yards at their out around midfield. Watson gets 8 yards as the clock goes under a minute. Incomplete, 3rd and 2. A short pass to McKinnon. First down and a timeout. 39 seconds remain with one timeout.

10:06 p.m. On the biggest play of the game, the ball is batted down, Moody from 52 yards, and for the lead….is good! The 49ers take the lead 19-16. It’s Mahomes with 1:52 and 2 timeouts to get 3 points.

10:02 p.m. The third down play gets a yard and it’s 3rd and 4 on the other side of the two-minute warning.

10 p.m. Mccaffrey grabs five more yards and the clock is now down inside 3 minutes

9:58 p.m. Juwan Jennings is eating up the Chiefs’ secondary. Gain of 17 for Jennings. Samuel grabs an end around that gets 9 yards, 4:30 remaining as Karlaftis is down getting tended to for a hand injury.

9:57 p.m. Ideally, for the 49ers, this game ends with Jake Moody knocking a chip shot field goal through the uprights as the clock hits triple zeroes. 6 minutes and two timeouts for each side.

9:54 p.m.  The 24-yarder is good. We are knotted at 16 with 6 minutes to go left in the Super Bowl.

9:52 p.m. Mahomes scampers around but falls down at the line of scrimmage. Field goal time for the Chiefs.

9:49 p.m. The Chiefs finally find some success on a pitch play to Pachco gaining 8. Another run for Pacheco has the Chiefs on the SF4. Pacheco gains 1 yard, and the clock winds under 7. 2nd and goal from the 3. A long developing play results in an incompletion, 3rd down.

9:47 p.m. The stars are starting to show. Travis Kelce, over the middle, keeps the drive alive for a gain of 13. Disaster almost ensues with a low snap, and Mahomes panicked, throwing the ball in the middle of the field, but it fell incomplete. Justin Watson runs a nice corner route for a gain of 22. The ball is at the SF21.

9:45 p.m. Mahomes opens the next drive with a strike to Kelce for 18 yards to the KC43. The Chiefs simply cannot run the ball. Pacheco gains nothing on a first-down carry. 2nd and 10 play goes incomplete to Rice.

9:41 p.m. Juwan Jennings caps off the drive with a touchdown from 8 yards out! The 49ers regain the lead 16-13! The extra point is blocked, and a big point is off the board, leading to a potential game-tying field goal.

9:40 p.m. McCaffrey gets 8 on 2nd down and it’s 3rd and 2 from the KC15. McCaffrey loses a yard on third down, and it’s decision time. 4th and 3 on the KC16. In a gutsy decision to go for it, Purdy finds Kittle to move the chains.

9:36 p.m. It’s crunch time. Aiyuk kicks off the fourth quarter with a gain of 20 down to the KC23. Purdy went with a play fake, and Purdy had Samuel in the endzone, but Chirs Jones of the Chiefs disrupted the play, leading to an overthrow.

9:30 p.m. McCaffrey grabs 6 on a run and massive 3rd and 4 for the 49ers comes next. Purdy didn’t like his look and burned a timeout. Juwan Jennings makes a huge catch and moves the chains out towards midfield. Samuel, battling the hamstring, grabs a screen for 9. The always-effective fullback dive moves the chains out to the KC40. That play runs the clock out for the third quarter and we move into (potentially) the last quarter of the 2023-2024 NFL season.

9:27 p.m. The first play for SF is batted down. Jon Feliciano, the right guard for the 49ers, is currently down with an injury. He’s being looked at for a right arm injury…2nd and 10.

9:25 p.m. On the next play, Marquez Valdes-Scantling finds a seam for a 16-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes! The Chiefs have their first lead in Super Bowl LVIII. 13-10 Chiefs. What a turn of events here late in the third quarter. The pressure is now on the young Brock Purdy.

9:24 p.m.The punt hits a 49er defender, and it’s an instant red zone opportunity for the Chiefs after a recovery! 1st and 10 for Mahomes and the Chiefs at the SF16.

9:23 p.m. The pass is incomplete, and the puntfest continues.

9:20 p.m. Richie James’ tough night continues returning punts. With lots of space, he doesn’t pick up much. It may be time for a new returner. Right around 3 yards a carry for the game. 2nd and 7. Mahomes steps through the pocket and flips to Kelce for 4. 3rd and 3.

9:17 p.m. Deebo Samuel is back on the field for this drive. Two plays go nowhere and it’s 3rd and 10. This may not age well, but the refs have been an afterthought up to this point, which is a very good thing. Another incompletion, and it’s the punt team for the 49ers.

9:15 p.m. …and Butker nails it! SF leads 10-6. Butker now holds the record for the longest field goal in the Super Bowl, 57 yards.

9:14 p.m. There is a streaker on the field. Butker will try to beat Moody’s record of 57 yards….

9:12 p.m. Pacheco gains a couple and sets up 2nd and 8. Mahomes was forced to throw the ball away and it’s 3rd and 8 from the SF 41. Mahomes dumps a pass-off for a gain of 4, its 4th and 4.

9:09 p.m. Kelce finally finds some room for a first down. Gain of 11. Pacheco nabs a screen for a modest gain of 3. After a Pacheco run, Mahomes takes matters into his own hands and runs through a pair of 49ers defenders for a big first down.

9:07 p.m. Chris Conley of the 49ers slingblades Richie James down to the ground on the punt return, and KC will begin at their 14.

9:02 p.m. The first play of scrimmage is a scary one for SF as Purdy avoids defenders and gets rid of them, resulting in a loss of 8. McCaffrey grabs a reception, getting the lost yards back, and it’ll be 3rd and 10. Purdy overthrows Kittle on a fly route down the sideline, and the punt unit will trot back onto the field. Before they do so, Deebo Samuel is currently down on the field, grabbing his hamstring. The dynamic wideout would be a massive loss to a team that has already lost first-team all-pro linebacker Dre Greenlaw to an Achilles injury.

8:58 p.m. Pacheco is stuffed up the middle, and the Chiefs are forced to punt again. The punt is a booming one, and SF will start the drive at their own 35-yard line.

8:56 p.m. Mahomes takes a shot to start the drive but finds no luck. 5 penalties, 4 fumbles and 2 giveaways are the story of the game for the Chiefs. Kelce slips free to get 9 and the Chiefs need a first down like we need air. Mahomes burns a timeout, which could be pivotal later in the night, especially as they are currently trailing. 3rd and 1.

8:53 p.m. Wishnowsky has an unbelievable punt downed at the 1-yard line, creating a tall task for Mahomes and company.

8:50 p.m. An incomplete pass and a false start set up 2nd and 15 for the 49ers, with the ball now around midfield. Another incomplete pass sets up the biggest play of the game, where momentum is really up for grabs. 3rd and 15. Purdy escapes for just 3 and the Chiefs get a much-needed stop.

8:47 p.m. The first play is a botched pitch that results in a loss of 14 yards, 2nd at 24. Noah Gray gets half of the needed yardage setting up 3rd and 12. Mahomes sails Kelce on a throw and is intercepted by Jaire Brown, setting up the 49ers in Chiefs territory!

8:46 p.m. After a wonderful performance from Usher and others, it’s time to start the second half. The Chiefs will get the ball first.

8:25 p.m. The halftime show begins!

8:12 p.m. After a small run by McCaffrey, the clock winds to halftime, where Usher will be performing.

8:10 p.m. The 49ers have all three timeouts and 20 seconds remaining.

8:08 p.m. A handoff to Rice grabs 2 more and KC calls timeout at the SF8 with 29 seconds to go. 3rd and 5, one timeout remains. Arik Armstead sacks Mahomes, and Butker will attempt a field goal. Butker knocks home a 28-yard field goal and cuts the deficit to 7.

8:04 p.m. Rashee Rice, on a pick play that is not called, is able to move the chains for the Chiefs. Rice follows up again with a gain of 11. Kansas City calls a timeout to stop the clock at 1:03 left in the first half at the SF13-yard line. Rice gets a couple on a screen and the clock winds.

8:01 p.m. A false start makes it 3rd and 10. It is a big play for Mahomes and Justin Watson to convert the play into 49er territory, it’s a gain of 21. Watson gets another look but is unable to haul in the ball, setting up 2nd and 10. Pacheco gets a touch out wide and grabs 8, leading to a 3rd and 2.

7:58 p.m. 3rd and 5 for the Chiefs after the 2-minute warning.

7:55 p.m.Pacheco kicks things off with an 8-yard tote. Pacheco carries again and shows some promise for the Chiefs, first down. It’s the Pacheco show; give him another six through the air. Clyde Edwards-Helaire enters the game and goes backward.

7:50 p.m. The 49ers break out a double pass from Juwan Jennings back to McCaffrey for a 21-yard touchdown! 10-0, 49ers.

7:46 p.m. A pair of McCaffrey touches collects a total of 13 yards, and the 49ers are out over midfield. Elijah Mitchell gets his first two touches and gets 7 yards. A big mistake by the Chiefs on a personal foul give the 49ers a free 15 yards, and they are knocking on the door of the red zone.

7:44 p.m. Deebo Samuel cannot haul in the first downplay, 2nd and 10. Samuel rebounds the following play to get 12 and move the chains.

7:39 p.m. Mahomes is called for a questionable intentional grounding and now it’s 2nd and 20 for the Chiefs. A poor decision by the Chiefs to run it sets up 3rd and 16. Mahomes escapes a sack and gets a couple but will be forced to punt yet again. It’s also been confirmed that Tony Romo cannot sing.

7:37 p.m. We have an ongoing scene. 49ers star linebacker Dre Greenlaw’s knee buckled simply running onto the field. He’s about to be carted away.

7:33 p.m. THE BALL IS MADE OF BUTTER! Richie James can’t hold on to the ball and is extremely lucky to get it back before ensuing 49ers defenders get to him. Adding fuel to the fire, Travis Kelce (the guy dating someone famous) was irate on the sidelines for being taken out of the game after the large gain for the Chiefs. Between Kelce and the fumbles, the Chiefs are lucky to be down 3-0. 9:16 to go in the second quarter.

7:30 p.m. Purdy escapes on a bootleg to get 10 and adds 15 for a horse collar tackle. Momentum is swinging in the 49ers’ direction. Back-to-back runs up the middle, setting up a crucial 3rd and 8 for both sides. Karlaftis is able to bring down Purdy and set up a punt for the 49ers. A huge stand for the Chiefs.

7:28 p.m. Through just over a quarter, the football has hit the turf three times, changing hands twice. Typically, sure players in Pacheco and McCaffrey could be showing signs of nerve early on.

7:26 p.m. Pacheco coughs up the football on the next play, and Hargreave recovers it to give the ball back to the 49ers!

7:24 p.m. Short pass to Pacheco, gets seven for the Chiefs. Short Pacheco run sets up a tricks 3rd and 1. Rice gets 3 on a short run and almost fumbles. Mahomes takes the top off to Mecole Hardman for a HUGE gain of 52!  First and goal for the Chiefs.

7:18 p.m. Chiefs blitz and Purdy takes a shot deep, but Trent Mcduffie of the Chiefs shuts down Deebo Samuel, setting up a 54-yard field kick for rookie Jake Moody. Moody nails a Super Bowl-record 55-yard kick! 49ers lead 3-0.

7:15 p.m. An incomplete pass and a loss of 4 due to Felix Anudike-Uzomah ends the first quarter in Las Vegas. The 49ers will have 3rd and 14 from the KC34 as we still look for the first points of the game.

7:12 p.m. After a short gain and an incomplete pass, Purdy finds veteran wideout Chris Conley for a huge first down and gain of 16. Purdy finds Ray-Ray Mcloud for a huge gain of 19 to the KC 30.

7:09 p.m. McCaffrey starts the drive with a solid gain of 7. SF, with a fumble and two penalties, has shown more promise moving the ball but needs to avoid shooting themselves in the foot. The 49ers elect to accept an offsides penalty and replay the first down. Consecutive runs for McCaffrey give the 49ers a fresh set of downs.

7:07 p.m. The 49ers will start their third drive from their own 17. With just under four minutes left in the first, we’re still looking for the game’s first score.

7:05 p.m. Mahomes and the Chiefs have been forced into two thirds and longs and need to establish some protection and run game to slow the defensive line of the 49ers.

7:04 p.m.  Mahomes gets lucky to hold on to the ball after getting tackled by Randy Gregory. A punt by Tommy Townsend nets 61 yards after great special teams coverage.

7:03 p.m. Chiefs find some running room, Pacheco gets 10, and the Chiefs first chain mover. 49ers respond with Chase Young devouring Mahomes and dumping him in the backfield for a loss of four. A screen to Rice goes nowhere for a loss of 1.

6:59 p.m. A booming punt from Mitch. A punt for the 49ers sets KC up at their own 11.

6:57 p.m. Williams committed another penalty. This time, it’s holding, erasing a large gain. 2nd and 27. McCaffrey screen gets seven back, setting up a dangerous 3rd and 20. After consecutive conservative throws, the 49ers are forced to punt. Coach Shanahan is possibly playing it safe with the young QB.

6:55 p.m. The game’s first penalty comes from the future hall of famer, Trent Williams. A false start moves the 49ers.

6:54 p.m. Purdy starts the drive with a dart to Brandon Aiyuk for 18 yards out to the KC 43. Deebo Samuel’s first carry is shut down on a jet sweep, a loss of 1.

6:51 p.m. Back-to-back plays for the Chiefs go nowhere. 3rd and 12 for Mahomes and company. Mahomes finds McKinnon for 8 yards but is short of the first down, forcing the Chiefs to punt. A modest punt of 43 yards and SF will start their second drive from their own 24-yard line.

As they were rolling down the field, McCaffrey coughs up the football! George Karlaftis recovers the ball for the Chiefs! KC takes over on their 27-yard line. A very promising drive ends in no points for the 49ers.

The 49ers are moving the Chiefs on the offensive line. CMC gains 20 yards through a 10-yard catch followed by a 10-yard run.

Christian Mccaffrey gains six yards on first down. Purdy then hits Juszczyk for 18 and a first down! Ball is now out to midfield.

Butker kicks off for a touchback.

6:30 p.m. The Chiefs have won the coin toss and elected to defer. Brock Purdy and the 49ers will get the ball first! For those with betting purposes, the coin toss landed on heads.
