The Green Bay Packers took down the Washington Commanders with a score of 27 to 18 on Thursday Night Football. In their “Winter Warning” uniforms, the Packers were able to control the flow of the game for most of the night. Green Bay’s defense, led by Micah Parsons, was able to put constant pressure on the Commander’s quarterback Jayden Daniels. The Packers’ star quarterback Jordan Love had an impressive night, passing for 292 yards with two touchdown passes.
The Packers’ first possession of the night ended with them turning the ball over on downs, though not before they were able to drive into Washington territory. Washington followed up with a quick three and out.
The first scoring of the night came on a seven play, 96-yard drive by the Packers offense. The drive featured a key 57-yard pass from Love to Tucker Kraft, that pushed the Pack deep into Commanders’ territory. A couple plays later, off the play fake, Romeo Doubs caught the first score of the game on a 5-yard pass from Love. After a quick extra point the Packers were up 7 – 0.
Both teams traded punts before the Packers offense struck again, with a 92-yard, 10 play scoring drive. The drive featured a plethora of big-time throws from Love, including a 37-yard pass to Matt Heath and a 17-yard crosser to Doubs. Josh Jacobs fought his way into the end zone to put Green Bay up by two scores. After the PAT, the Pack was up 14-0.
On the next drive for the Washington offense, Daniels was finally able to move the chains. After a failed shot into the end zone, kicker Matt Gay put the Commanders on the board with a 51-yard field goal.
Following a quick three and out by the Packers, a 24-yard return by Jaylin Lane set up the Commanders at their own 43-yard line. With the clock winding down on the first half, Washington drove into field goal range with a combination of runs and short passes. After pressure from the Packers defense, led by Parsons, Washington was forced to try for the 58- yard field goal, which Gay missed.
In their last possession of the half, The Pack was able to take the ball into field goal range, but Brandon McManus doinked it off the uprights and the half ended with the Packers 14, Commanders 3.
Hoping for a better second half, the Commanders received the ball on the kickoff. Deebo Samuel sped down the field on a 50-yard return, setting the Commanders up with a short field. Daniels faced constant pressure, but was able to deliver, moving the offense to the Packers’ 31-yard line. After a third down sack by Eli Cooper and Parsons, the Commanders attempted another field goal but failed when Gay banged it off of the right upright.
The Packers next drive featured more big passes from Love, including a 23-yard pass to Luke Musgrave and a 19-yard pass to Kraft. The Packers offense marched to the goal line, but the Commanders defense held the Packers to a short field goal, putting the Packers up 17-3.
Both teams traded punts before a good return by Lane put the Commanders at midfield to start the fourth quarter. Washington battled hard against a stout Green Bay defense. Daniels showed poise culminating in his 20-yard touchdown pass to Zach Ertz, to make it a one score game. Packers 17, Commanders 10.
On their next possession, the Packers offense methodically drove down the field. Green Bay’s offense capped off their nine play, 65-yard drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Love to Kraft. Packers 24, Commanders 10.
With momentum on Green Bay’s side, Washington’s next drive stalled, ending with a turnover on downs. The Packers were able to capitalize, with McManus punching it through the uprights to put the Packers up 27-10.
With the clock winding down, the Commanders drove down the field, chipping away at the defense. Washington was able to cash in on a 10-yard pass from Daniels to Samuel. The Commanders went for two and scored to make the game 27-18.
Desperation was creeping in when Washington declared an onside kick, but it was recovered by the Packers. Each team had one more possession before Green Bay’s offense assembled in victory formation, moving the team to 2-0 on the season, securing the win by a final score of 27-18.
