Take a risk and make this year’s Halloween costume memorable

OPINION: Halloween is the best holiday, and I will die on that hill. Halloween in Orono is even better because everyone is ready to party without shame. You can be a character from your favorite movie, a historical figure, a celebrity, or something that does not even exist. Yet, recently, Halloween seems to be a competition to see who can wear the same five costumes as everyone else. There is nothing wrong with a classic costume, but Halloween is the perfect opportunity to get creative, so why settle for the most basic option?

Walk into almost any Halloween party, and you are bound to see the usual suspects. There will be vampires, witches, Jokers and nurses. You might also run into a handful of cowboys, devils, angels and superheroes. These costumes are classics for a reason. They are recognizable, easy to put together and usually do not require much planning. However, when half the room looks like it came from the same costume rack, it becomes difficult to stand out.

The problem is not that these costumes are bad. In fact, some of the best costumes are simple ones. The problem is that people sometimes stop at the first idea that comes to mind instead of putting their own spin on it. A vampire can be more than a cape and fake blood. A cowboy can be more than a hat and boots. Even a ghost can be something other than a white sheet with eyeholes cut into it. A little imagination can turn an ordinary costume into something memorable.

Creativity also does not have to mean spending a fortune. Some of the best Halloween costumes come from clothes already sitting in your closet, items borrowed from friends or a quick trip to a thrift store. A costume based on an obscure movie character, a ridiculous internet meme or an everyday object can be more entertaining than an expensive outfit bought straight off a shelf. Sometimes the most popular costumes are the ones that make people stop and ask, “Wait, what are you supposed to be?”

There is also something satisfying about coming up with an idea yourself. Halloween gives people a chance to show off their personalities, interests and sense of humor in ways they normally would not. A creative costume can become a conversation starter, an inside joke or the highlight of someone’s night. It gives people a reason to remember your costume instead of forgetting it by the time they get home.

Of course, not everyone wants to spend hours planning an outfit, and nobody should feel pressured to turn Halloween into a major artistic production. Sometimes, a simple costume is all someone needs to have a good time. The goal is not to criticize people for dressing as witches or vampires, but to encourage everyone to think outside the box before choosing the same outfit they wore three years ago.

At the end of the day, Halloween should be about having fun and expressing yourself. Take a chance and give people something to talk about. That does not mean your costume has to be super niche, impossible to understand or so complicated that you need to explain it to everyone. Just get creative, and have a happy Halloween!
