Club maintenance
The Student Senate approved merging the organizations Students of University of Maine in Technical Theater with Maine Masque.
Club presentations
The club Blue Takes Peru thanked the Student Senate for giving them funds for their volunteer trip to Ghana. They reported that they went in two groups; one group provided free medical treatment for people with malaria, and the other group volunteered at a local orphanage.
Executive reports
Vice President for Financial Affairs Bradley Bailey reported $474,212.61 in unallocated funds. He made a correction to the funds he reported that the Black Student Union returned last week to $322.36.
Vice President for Student Organizations Taylor Cray reported that Student Heritage Alliance Council was the featured club of the week.
Vice President for Student Entertainment Corey Claflin reported that he was finalizing plans for two comedians, Gary Gulman and Alex Moffat, to perform at the Collins Center for the Arts on Nov. 19. Planning is still underway for a spring concert.
Periodic reports
Chair of the Fair Elections Practices Commission Matthew Akers reported that Attorney Shawn O’Mara is currently helping to resolve legal issues for three UMaine students. O’Mara is averaging three client meetings a day and has a conference call planned with a consultant regarding student club supervision. He emphasized that O’Mara is available to do club presentations about student legal rights.
Orono Town Council Liaison Cameron Bowie reported that he is in contact with town officials about issues that may affect UMaine.
Reports of standing committees
Harrison Ransley with the Political Activism Committee is continuing to reach out to students on campus and encourage them to vote.
Chase Flaherty with the Services Committee asked the Student Senate for suggestions regarding campus safety.
Representative board reports
Chris Toothaker with the Commuter and Non-traditional Students Representative Board reported that the group’s pancake breakfast was a success and they are planning another.
Chase Flaherty with the Honors College Student Advisory Board reported that Frankenstein Day went well.
Sheldon Green with the Sustainability and Environmental Actions Division reported that the group is going to be collecting feedback from students about sustainability on campus.
Community association reports
Mohammad Hashmi with the Student Heritage Alliance Council reported that his group will be co-hosting Multicultural Thanksgiving. Additionally, they are planning a movie night in the Bangor Room of the Memorial Union for Nov. 30.
Meghan Frisard with the Feminist Collective reported to the Student Senate that the group is going to be hosting a “Party at the Polls” event in Stewart Commons on Nov. 3, with the goal of increasing voter turnout. They will also be hosting a reproductive justice photo exhibit on Nov. 5., an event called “Out of Silence” on Nov. 16 and a feminist craft night with the women’s, gender and sexuality studies program.
Zarni Chanapatdaychaport with the International Student Association reported that Culturefest is planned for Nov. 3, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. They are hosting a Halloween dance party at The Roost in Orono from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Nov. 2, and the group is planning to give a cultural presentation at Old Town Middle School in the future.
Consent agenda
Student Senate approved the consent agenda to allocate $925 to the South Asian Association of Maine, $500 to the Black Student Union and $487.22 to Wilde Stein: Queer Straight Alliance.
Unfinished business
The Student Senate voted Sarah Brindisi onto the Executive Budget Committee.
New business
The Student Senate passed three resolutions to allocate $4,270 to the Interfraternity Council, $1,600 to the Feminist Collective and $2,500 to the Black Student Union.
The Student Senate passed three motions to allocate $1,366 to the Intramural Sports Council, $150 to the Sustainability and Environmental Actions Division and $315.23 to the African Student Association.
