UMSG recognizes student leadership, nominations remain open for committee roles

The General Student Senate of the University of Maine Student Government (UMSG) held its second meeting of the semester on Jan. 27, led by President Keegan Tripp and chaired by Vice President Cynthia Shelmerdine. This meeting, held at the Buchanan Alumni House in an effort to recognize student leaders and deepen the relationship between students and the alumni association, saw the Senate elect officers for each of its committees. There were no action items considered besides the nominating process.

Executive Reports

In his report, President Tripp said that UMSG had decided against re-hiring a clerk and that Executive Administrative Assistant George Finch would be taking over the responsibilities of the role for the remainder of the semester, citing the futility of hiring and onboarding a new employee for such a short period. He also stated that the search continues for a new UMaine candidate for the position of student trustee, with the deadline for consideration being Feb. 1.

Vice President of Financial Affairs Joshua Bohm reported that the remaining unallocated budget stood at $120,541.34, unchanged from the prior week.

Vice President of Student Entertainment Dillon Leeman relayed that UMSG had posted the date and location of its spring concert on Instagram, and said that the announcement regarding the opener and headliner would be forthcoming.

Unfinished Business

At the previous meeting, nominations were opened for each internal committee role, and are to be left open for a period of two meetings. Another round of nominations for each role closed this week, with nominated candidates having an opportunity to deliver a short speech indicating why they believed they should be elected to the positions. After hearing these speeches, senators voted to decide who should fill each role for the duration of the semester.
