The 90th edition of The Masters occurred this weekend. Of course with the largest golf tournament of the year, some chaos occurred. Let’s get into the top performers (and some who underperformed) at Augusta National.
Rory Mcilroy: Mcilroy just won his second straight Masters championship after dominating the first few days of the tournament. After Thursday and Friday, Mcilroy was in the lead by a staggering five strokes. After a weaker performance Saturday, his lead shrunk with him and Cameron Young being tied prior. On Sunday, Mcilroy was the final tee time after being tied for the lead. Due to this, he watched other competitors get to close in on his lead. On Sunday, he shot a 71, one under par, which gave him the win by a single stroke. This win made Rory the fourth golfer to ever win back-to-back and the first to do so since Tiger Woods in 2001-2002.
Scottie Scheffler: It is very well agreed upon that Scheffler is the best golfer in the world. He has been ranked as the number one golfer in the power rankings for 151 consecutive weeks. This is why it should come as no surprise that he came in second place at this year’s Masters tournament. After shooting par average for the first two days, Sheffler wasn’t in the top 20 scorers heading into the weekend. Saturday this all changed though, after shooting a 65 he jumped up to being tied for seventh with a handful of other players. His 68 on Sunday just wasn’t enough to beat Rory though with his strong weekend earning him second place and a 2.4 million dollar prize purse.
Cameron Young: On Sunday morning, Mcilroy and Young were tied, both shooting a collective 11 under par thus far in the tournament. Young had been playing some of the best golf of his career and was looking to solidify himself as a golf legend by winning the green jacket. Unfortunately, Young couldn’t live up to the hype on Sunday. After shooting a 73, Young fell from tied to first to tied for third. His 10-under on the tournament tied him with a few notable names such as Russel Henley, Tyrell Hatton and last year’s runner-up Justin Rose.
Additional Golfers who had strong performances but weren’t quite at the top of the leaderboard include Sam Burns and Collin Morikawa, both of whom finished tied for seventh. Past winners Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed and Hideki Matsuyama all tied for 12th. Other prior champions who have won and made the cut to the weekend include Jon Rahm and Dustin Johnson.
Notable Names who didn’t make the cut include Danny Willet, Akshay Bhatia, Bubba Watson, Bryson Dechambeau and Min Woo Lee.
Golf’s biggest tournament was incredibly entertaining with the world’s best golfers all competing on the sports biggest stage. FanDuel has already created their odds of winning next year’s tournament with Scheffler being the front runner and Mcilroy and Rahm following close behind.
