UMaine fraternities respond to Cornell sexual assault lawsuit

On Sept. 14, a former Cornell University student identified in court documents as “Jane Doe” filed a lawsuit against several members of the Chi Phi fraternity, alleging that they sexually assaulted her in 2024. The lawsuit, known as the “Cornell Seven” case, has prompted responses from Greek life organizations nationwide, including several fraternities at the University of Maine. Some of the UMaine fraternities who issued statements recently include Alpha Gamma Rho, Beta Theta Pi, Kappa Sigma, Delta Tau Delta, Phi Kappa Sigma and Sigma Phi Epsilon.

The statements were posted to Instagram between Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.

“Our brotherhood, and all Greek life at UMaine strongly condemns any sexual assault, coercion or otherwise harmful behavior within our community,” Alpha Gamma Rho’s Instagram story read. “We firmly stand by our values, and stand ready to serve our community and create a safer environment for students.”

Beta Theta Pi expressed concern for the Cornell community as a whole.

“We recognize that these events are deeply painful and have a lasting impact on individuals, families and communities. We stand in support of those who have been affected and hope for continued healing, respect and care during this time,” read Beta Theta Pi’s Instagram story.

Kappa Sigma asserted that simply raising awareness was not sufficient and that Greek life has a responsibility to create a safer environment for the community.

“We stand with survivors of sexual assault and with all those affected by sexual violence. We encourage our members and community to educate themselves, look out for one another, stand up for those in need and believe victims when they come forward,” Kappa Sigma’s statement reads. “We are deeply disturbed by the recent events involving members of the Cornell University community. It is not enough to simply say that we condemn these actions. Silence and inaction are not sufficient.”

Delta Tau Delta expressed a similar sentiment in an Instagram story.

“Supporting women requires action. It means respecting consent and personal boundaries, rejecting degrading language and conduct and responding to reports of harm with compassion and seriousness. Survivors deserve access to support and a fair, thorough response without blame, intimidation or retaliation. No concern for an individual’s standing or an organization’s reputation should take precedence over another person’s safety and dignity,” read Delta Tau Delta’s story.

Phi Kappa Sigma expressed concern for all victims of sexual assault.

“There is no place in Greek life for sexual assault, coercion or behavior that puts others at risk. Brotherhood means respect, accountability and holding each other to a higher standard. We stand with survivors and remain committed to promoting safety, respect and accountability within our chapter and community,” Phi Kappa Sigma’s statement reads.

Sigma Phi Epsilon provided resources in their statement and a reminder about their second annual Mile in Her Shoes event, which occured on Oct. 1 and was a fundraiser for Partners for Peace and Rape Response Services.

“In light of what has been reported, it is more important than ever to stand together as members of our campus and remind one another that everyone deserves to feel safe, respected and supported,” wrote Sigma Phi Epsilon in an Instagram story.

UMaine Student Life also issued their annual “Students’ Right to Know” email to the community on Oct. 1, which includes policies and handbooks for student conduct as well as Title IX resources. The email contains information on accessing the annual security report and the sexual harassment policy.

If you have experienced sexual violence and would like to file a report, UMaine has an Incident Report Form in addition to in-person services such as Title IX Student Services in Room 235 at the Memorial Union. Cutler Health Center also offers a confidential resource advisor as well as counseling services, which are accessible through the Student Success Hub.
