The Oct. 1 the General Student Senate meeting began with the approval of the Sept. 24 meeting minutes.
General Good and Welfare:
Vice President Chase Flaherty went over Robert’s Rule of the week, which was discussing what a Point of Privilege is.
New Senators, Officer Appointments, Resignations:
Matthew Fishbein was appointed.
Club Maintenance:
The University of Maine Swim Club presented and were approved for reactivation with 15 members.
Guest Speaker:
There was no guest speaker.
Executive Reports:
President Bentley Simpson encouraged the senate members to attend the Dirigo Leadership Conference.
In addition, he and the rest of the executive board have been reviewing the “Eventus” software and are continuing to research the software before implementing it at the UMaine campus. Additionally, a proposal is being written for a Student Mental Health Committee in an effort to improve mental health services on campus.
Vice President for Student Entertainment Logan Armando presented a poll to discuss concert themes for the Maine Day concert. Out of 787 students who voted in the poll, 171 voted for rap.
Periodic Reports:
Director of Communications Owen Vadala discussed a scholarship that Student Government is offering that will be available to students, which will be posted on social media.
Reports of Standing Committees:
Services Chair Emmeline Willey met with campus housing staff to discuss improving emergency housing services for the campus. The services committee will be working on campus to improve emergency housing services.
Representative Board:
Lauryn Ryan for the Honors College Student Advisory Board (SAB) discussed a slew of events occurring on campus open to any and all students, hosted by SAB. Additionally, attendance at 15 of 25 events will enter students in a raffle for a $150 gift card to the UMaine Bookstore.
Community Association Reports:
The Feminist Collective reported that they were unable to hold their Implicit Bias training at the scheduled day and time, and will be holding it on Monday, Oct. 7.
Consent Agenda:
The Maine Peace Action Committee allocated $750 for formatting, layout and printing of the 45th Fall Peace and Justice newsletter.
The South Asian Association of Maine allocated $700 for decorations, paper plates and cups, drinks and food for their Welcome Event on Oct. 5 in Estabrooke Hall.
New Business:
An act to allocate $2,991.67 in funds to the Woodsmen Team for registration fees and hotel fees for fall meets at the University of New Hampshire and the University of New Brunswick.
An act to allocate $2,250 in funds to the Society of Women Engineers for flights, hotel and transportation fees for nine students to attend the WE19 National Conference of the Society of Women Engineers from Nov. 7-9 in Anaheim, California.
Nominations and Elections:
Sen. Redwood was nominated and approved as Legal Services Liaison.
Sen. Hammill was nominated and approved as Faculty Senate Student Representative.
