A member of the University of Maine’s men’s basketball team’s recently announced commits, 6’3” point guard Logan Carey is more than ready to contribute to head coach Chris Markwood’s group in the 2023 to 2024 America East season.
Coming out of St. Paul’s School in New Hampshire, Carey is one of the more exciting prospects in college basketball. Prepared to arrive in Orono in the fall of 2023, the crafty playmaker is set to join a Black Bear group that has been consistently improving over the past couple of seasons. Carey was able to play AAU ball most recently with the Middlesex Magic where he led his side to a second-place finish in the nation during his tenure, as well as capturing the 17U Under Armour Association Spring 2022 Finals trophy. Carey’s winning mentality and experience is something that certainly will be of value when he steps out on the court next year.
A testament to his professional mindset, Carey has even gone as far as implementing a personal recovery routine that he’s followed at the conclusion of every game he’s played. The Shelton, Connecticut native seems hungry as ever to begin his career as a Black Bear in 2023. We here at Maine Campus Media had an opportunity to ask the high-flying guard some questions ahead of his signing day last week.
Q: How did you fall in love with basketball?
A: I fell in love with basketball through being in the basketball environment as a kid. My brother was a good player and someone I always idolized when I was younger, so being at his games and watching his love for the game essentially got passed on to me.
Q: What does basketball mean to you?
A: Basketball is one of the things I’m most grateful for in my life as it’s opened so many doors from traveling the country and meeting new people. It was always my goal of mine to not have my family pressured by any finances relating to education, and it means everything to me that I can attend a world-renowned prep school and now a university without financial burden. It’s crazy to think that so many amazing things have happened in my life because I was able to put a ball in a hoop and that’s why this sport means everything.
Q: What’s been the most notable moment in your basketball career up to this point?
A: There have been so many amazing moments in my basketball career so far, however, the most notable was probably this summer being on the Under Armour Circuit playing against some of the best players and teams in the country. My team ended up winning the spring championship in front of tons of fans, coaches and media which was an electrifying experience. The whole summer made my love for basketball grow and we were fortunate enough to finish as the 2nd best team in the country.
Q: What’s your end goal here with the Black Bears?
A: My goal is to change the culture. Obviously winning is a huge part in that, but I want basketball to become big not only at the school but in the state.
Q: You had a few choices for college, what drew you to the University of Maine?
A: I chose the University of Maine because I know the goals of the new staff and just like they believed in me by offering me [my scholarship], I believe in their goals. I can also say after visiting close to 20 schools, Maine by far showed me the best family-like environment not only with the team and staff but also with random fans in public.
Q: What will you be studying in your time up at Orono?
A: I plan on majoring in kinesiology to learn more about the bodies and relationships with form and function. I think really knowing how the body moves will not only help myself through the rest of my basketball career but also allow me to help others who took similar paths as me.
Q: What’s your dream job?
A: My dream has always been to play in the NBA and that is a dream I will stick with through college. However, I would love to play professionally and then go into opening my own training facility for professional athletes teaching them the proper ways to move especially because there is so much false information out on social media today.
Q: What can Black Bear fans expect from you out on the court this season?
A: I want to be a strong IQ guard that the team needs to win. I think a winning attitude is super crucial to building a good culture. And winning is what fans want.
Q: When you’re not on the court, what can we find you getting up to?
A: I like to draw, hang out with friends at the beach or the gym, or listen to music.
