Police Beat for Oct. 15

Oct. 3 – 6:37 p.m.

Between 4:45 p.m. and 6:37 p.m. on Oct. 3 somebody stole a $600 bike from the bicycle rack near Rogers Hall. The cable was cut by the thief. There are no suspects.

Oct. 3 – 11:15 p.m.

In the late hours of Oct. 3, Officer Sarah Angelo of Orono Police Department (OPD) was on patrol and pulled up behind an 18-year-old male’s truck. Noticing an expired registration sticker, Officer Angelo pulled the individual over near the stoplight in downtown Orono. There was a strong scent of alcohol in the car, but he denied drinking any alcohol. After a roadside sobriety test, Officer Angelo asked the male again if he had been drinking, and this time he admitted that he had. She then arrested him and brought him back to the station, where he blew under .08 but still registered alcohol in his system. The male was summoned for driving with alcohol in his system under the age of 21 and given a Nov. 8 court date.

Oct. 4 – 11:52 p.m.

Officers were called to the Phi Gamma Delta house (FIJI) for a report of a fist fight. When officers arrived, they found no evidence of a fight, no witnesses and no caller.

Oct. 5 – 11:22 p.m.

A resident assistant called in a report of two intoxicated first-year males on the first floor of Gannett Hall. University of Maine Police Department (UMPD) officers arrived and talked to the students, who admitted to drinking a couple water bottles of Orloff vodka and smoking marijuana. The students had no alcohol or marijuana on them. They were referred to Student Conduct Code Committee.

Oct. 6 – 12:27 p.m.

A student alerted officers to a theft near the Baumann Nelson House. The student reported that an LED light and battery pack had been stolen from the student’s bicycle. There are no suspects.

Oct. 9 – 2:50 p.m.

Sometime between 3:50 p.m. Friday and 2:50 p.m. Tuesday, someone cut the lock from and stole a Diamondback bike from an Oxford Hall bicycle rack. There are currently no suspects.

Oct. 9 – 7:00 p.m.

Sargent Barrieau of OPD was conducting a check of a 23-year-old male’s apartment in Orono. Previous bail conditions permitted officers to stop and check in on his residence at any time. Upon entering the individual’s room, Sargent Barrieau discovered an elaborate hydroponic-based setup for cultivating marijuana, complete with black pop-up tents, PVC watering pipes and massive growing lights. There were also two large mason jars larger than 10 inches in diameter full of marijuana. Outside the residence, Sargent Barrieau found four mature plants, between four and five feet high, growing. The man was arrested for violation of bail conditions due to the marijuana grow and alcohol that was also found in the house. He was given a court date of Nov. 22. All the marijuana was brought back to OPD.

Oct. 10 – 10:00 a.m.

A student called to report a stolen bike, taken sometime between Oct. 6 and Oct. 10, near Doris Twitchell Allen Village and Patch housing. The lock was cut and there are no suspects.

Oct. 10 – 10:30 a.m.

A woman came into UMPD to report that someone had entered her vehicle sometime between Oct. 4 and Oct. 10. The woman said that she had noticed a water bottle with ashes in it and the smell of cigarettes in the air when she entered her car after leaving it for roughly a week. She believes someone broke into the car only to smoke cigarettes. There are no suspects.

Oct. 10 – 3:34 p.m.

A man reported that sometime between Oct. 1 and Oct. 10 his bike was stolen from the east side of Wells Commons. The bike had been locked. There are currently no suspects.
