Track and Field opens new facility with dominant performance at inaugural meet

The University of Maine Black Bears’ track and field opened its new facility dominantly this weekend, hosting its inaugural meet and delivering a series of strong performances across both track and field events.

Competing at home for the first time on the new surface, Maine made an immediate statement, finishing first in both the men’s and women’s team standings. The men totaled 271 points, while the women followed with 242 points, highlighting a strong overall showing across the program.

The meet not only marked the beginning of the outdoor season, but also the start of a new era for Maine track and field. The addition of a dedicated home facility provides the program with enhanced training opportunities and the ability to host future competitions, giving athletes a consistent environment to develop and compete.

On the track, Maine saw several standout performances in distance events. In the women’s 5000-meter run, first-year Lauren Hamilton claimed first place with a time of 17:52.80. The Black Bears continued to dominate in the women’s 3000-meter run, sweeping the top three spots as second-year Ryan O’Connor finished first, followed by first-year Lila Garbett and second-year Kennedy Taylor.

Maine also controlled the middle-distance events, showcasing both depth and consistency. In the women’s 800-meter run, the Black Bears swept the top four spots, led by third-year Addison Nelson, with second-year Abby Rodriquenz, third-year Emma Tessier and third-year Toni Vaillancourt close behind. In the 1500-meter run, first-year Kara Tschida secured first place, with teammate third-year Avery O’Neill finishing second.

In sprint events, Maine also delivered strong performances. First-year Makenna Drouin led a sweep of the top three spots in the women’s 100-meter dash, while second-year Bayleigh Shanahan and second-year Callie Tennett followed closely behind. Shanahan later returned to win the 200-meter dash, leading another strong showing for the Black Bears and demonstrating versatility across sprint distances.

The men’s team also saw success across distance and sprint events. In the 1500-meter run, Maine swept the top three spots, led by first-year Aran Johnson, with first-year Ethan Keller and second-year Eli Palmer following. The Black Bears continued their dominance in the 3000-meter run, where second-year Adam Bendetson, second-year Harrison Grenier, and second-year Owen Transue finished first through third, reinforcing the team’s strength in distance events.

Maine’s success extended into the field events, where athletes continued to deliver strong results. Fourth-year Ava Zollars led the way in the women’s hammer throw with a firstplace mark of 47.29 meters, while second-year Sabine Sites followed with a secondplace finish. Sites also claimed first place in the discus, with third-year Riley Gavigan finishing second.

On the men’s side, fourth-year Gavin McGarrity and fourth-year Ryker Brown secured the top two spots in the hammer throw, while Brown added another first-place finish in the shot put. In the jumps, third-year Conor Morin won the triple jump, and second-year Will Rush led the long jump with a first-place finish, contributing to Maine’s overall dominance in field events.

The meet also highlighted the depth of the roster, with multiple athletes placing across events and contributing valuable points. Maine won the women’s 4×400-meter relay and took the top three spots in the men’s 4×400-meter relay.

Beyond individual performances, the meet emphasized Maine’s ability to compete across all event groups, from sprints and distance races to throws and jumps. The balance across disciplines played a key role in the team’s success in the overall standings.

The inaugural meet provided an opportunity for athletes to establish early-season marks while competing in a home environment. For many, competing in the new facility added an extra level of energy and significance to the event.

Maine will look to build on its strong start as the outdoor season continues, using the momentum from the opening weekend as a foundation for future competition.
