09/15:
Around 8:30 a.m., criminal mischief was reported at Somerset Hall. Multiple exit signs were damaged. There are no cameras within Somerset Hall that captured the offense. No suspects have been identified at this time.
At about 10:30 a.m., a vagrancy complaint was filed regarding a male subject sleeping in a parked vehicle outside the Stillwater River Trail. The man was not a student and said he was tired. He was then asked by a University of Maine Police Department (UMPD) officer to move his vehicle.
Around 2 p.m., a property damage crash was reported in the Hilltop Commons parking lot. A student came out of class and noticed damage to their vehicle. There are no suspects at this time, and no one was injured.
Another property damage crash was reported at the same time, outside of Aroostook Hall. The responding officer reported that a parked vehicle was sideswiped by another vehicle pulling into a parking space. There are no suspects at this time and no one was injured.
At around 8 p.m., a harassment complaint was filed at the Alfond Arena. The complaint was not made by a UMaine student, but was filed by a parent watching a high school practice at the arena who felt they were being harassed by an adult male suspect. Responding officers spoke with the suspect and asked him to leave. UMPD will move to ban the suspect from campus should further harassment complaints be filed.
09/16:
At midnight, a theft complaint was filed at Oxford Hall regarding three missing light covers in the west wing of the building. The campus safety officer submitted paperwork to have the light covers replaced. There is no suspect at this time.
At about 1:30 p.m., a property damage complaint was filed at Hancock Hall. Responding officers found damage inflicted to a light pole on the sidewalk outside the building. The groundsperson who reported the damage commented that it looked as though the pole had been damaged over a week ago. It will cost 1,000 dollars to fix the pole. There is no suspect at this time.
Around 5:30 p.m, a noise complaint was reported through Campus Eyes regarding a white motorcycle with a “very loud exhaust.” The motorcycle has been reported anonymously before. UMPD is still looking for the motorcycle, and there is no suspect at this time.
At around 9:30 p.m., there was a disorderly conduct complaint filed at Gannett Hall. The complaint alleges that two male students were sitting in a parked pick-up truck outside the hall. Two female students approached their vehicle and asked for their Snapchat. The male students said no and flipped off the female students, who then reported the incident.
Also at this time, an information complaint was filed through Campus Eyes. The complaint mentions a vehicle that is consistently traveling too fast on Rangeley Road. There is no suspect at this time.
09/17:
At 1 a.m., UMPD made an agency assist for the Orono police department. An Orono officer stopped a vehicle with a Colombian national occupant. There was a language barrier, so the Orono police department had a UMPD officer who is also a Colombian national assist with the traffic stop.
At 5 p.m., a property damage crash was reported in row F of the Hilltop parking lot. The owner of the vehicle came out of their dorm and noticed the damage. There was white paint transfer found on the vehicle. There is no suspect at this time.
Around 11:30 p.m., a suspicious complaint was filed near the foresty greenhouse on Greenhouse Lane. The complaint alleges that a suspicious male was standing near the greenhouses. Responding officers spoke with the male, who was a tenant at nearby public housing and felt ill. UMPD commented that public housing in proximity to the forestry greenhouse can lead to suspicious complaints as tenants will walk through the campus.
09/18:
At 9:30 a.m., a property damage crash was reported at Deering Hall. A parked vehicle was struck while the owner was in the hall. There are no suspects at this time.
Around 10:30 p.m., UMPD made an agency assist for Theta Chi Fraternity at 371 College Ave. Someone was cooking, which triggered the fire alarm.
09/19:
At about 3 p.m., there was a suspicious complaint filed at the Memorial Union. The complaint named a student sleeping on the couches inside the entryway. Responding officers talked with the student, who shared they were waiting for class. The student was not intoxicated, and said they were just tired.
Around 8 p.m., a theft complaint was filed at Barrows Hall. The alleged theft occurred at around 4 p.m., but was not reported until later in the evening. The item stolen was a Discover credit card, but no fraudulent charges have been reported since the theft. UMPD officers recommend students freeze their credit cards after such thefts occur. There is no suspect at this time.
At 10 p.m., another theft complaint was filed at Aroostook Hall. The theft allegedly occurred on Sept. 16, but was not reported until three days later. A postal service worker reported their hand-truck dolly had been stolen from their vehicle in the parking lot. UMPD officers are currently reviewing footage, but there is no suspect at this time.
09/20:
At midnight, an information complaint was filed through Campus Eyes. The complaint shares that someone was loudly screaming and making threats near the Beta Theta Pi house near College Ave. Upon arrival, responding officers found no one in the area and the complaint was dismissed as unfounded.
At 2 p.m., a property damage crash was filed near the Collins Center for the Arts. A student came in to report themselves for backing into a parked vehicle in the Belgrade parking lot.
Around 6 p.m., a suspicious complaint was filed at Hotel Ursa due to a hypodermic needle discovered by a groundsperson in the grass outside the hotel. Responding officers disposed of the needle. UMPD noted that since the hotel can be rented by the public, drug use near the property is being closely monitored by the UMPD.
At 10 p.m., an alcohol offense was filed near Long Road. An underaged student was spotted walking towards their dorm with an open container. The observing officer intervened and had the student pour out what remained of the alcoholic beverage. The UMPD has closed the offense and the student has been referred to student conduct.
09/21:
At about 2 a.m., there was a theft complaint filed at Alpha Gamma Rho located at 134 College Ave. A student reportedly lost their cell phone while attending a party, which was stolen by a male suspect officers have yet to locate. The student called their lost cell phone from a friend’s phone, and the suspect was evasive when the student requested their phone back. After the suspect hung up on the student, the phone was tracked as heading southbound on the interstate. The phone died and is no longer pinging.
Around 1:30 p.m., a noise complaint was filed at Phi Gamma Delta at 79 College Ave. When officers arrived, there was no noise or people found around the property. The complaint was marked as unfounded.
At 8:30 p.m., a complaint regarding a hazard in the driveway of Beta Theta Phi at 130 Munson Road was reported. When responding officers arrived, no hazard in the driveway was found, so the complaint was unfounded and dismissed.
09/22:
At about midnight, another alcohol offense was observed near the intersection of Long and Gannett Road. An underaged male suspect was intoxicated and activated the campus blue light system near the sidewalk. UMPD located the suspect, and the student has been referred to student conduct.
Around 10 p.m., criminal mischief was reported at Oxford Hall due a missing light cover in the hall. There is no suspect at this time.
09/23:
At 7 a.m., a theft complaint regarding a student’s stolen bike was filed at Gannett Hall. The bike was reportedly leaning against a bike rack to which the bike was not secured with a lock. There is no suspect at this time.
At about 3 p.m., another theft complaint was filed in the Memorial Union. A student reported that their pack of Crayola markers was stolen from the room they were studying in. There is no suspect at this time.
Around 10 p.m., a property damage crash was reported in the New Balance Student Recreation Center parking lot. A student shared with responding officers that someone hit his parked vehicle while he was in the gym.
At 10:30 p.m., a suspicious complaint was filed near the Hilltop parking lot after reports of people throwing things at passing vehicles. Responding officers found no suspects or damage to vehicles upon arrival, so the complaint was marked unfounded and dismissed.
09/24:
Around 11 a.m., a suspicious complaint was filed near the Folger Library regarding a male using a bullhorn to preach bible verses to passing students. Responding officers shared that the male viewed his protest as education for UMaine students. The male suspect reportedly was trying to spread awareness about “sinful” activities like homosexuality and pornography. UMPD asked him to leave campus after reports shared his bullhorn was disrupting classes.
