Police Beat: 2/28 to 3/6

2/28:

At 10 p.m., the University of Maine Police Department (UMPD) responded to a disorderly conduct complaint called in by a student on Long Road. The student shared that a pickup truck with several individuals inside threw empty containers at her while she was walking down the street. None of the objects struck her, but she reported feeling unsafe after the interaction. The Orono Police Department made contact with four male non-students in the vehicle outside the Alfond Sports Stadium, who were issued criminal trespass warnings and told to leave campus.

3/1:

Around midnight, a noise complaint was reported from near the Delta Tau Delta fraternity house on College Avenue after a caller shared there was excessive noise. An officer in the area visited the house but found the complaint to be unfounded, as no loud noise was heard on scene. The report was closed.

At 11 a.m., the Office of Student Life requested that UMPD remove and issue a criminal trespass warning to a male non-student reportedly living in a dorm room in Androscoggin Hall with a student. Responding officers made contact with the non-student and issued the criminal trespass warning. He cooperated after being advised to leave.

3/2:

At 9 p.m., an information complaint was filed from Somerset Hall. A student shared that her ex-boyfriend, whom she has a protective order against, had recently been pursuing her current roommate after matching on Tinder. UMPD determined the protective order was not directly violated because the conversation is not occurring in her space and does not involve her directly. However, UMPD shared they are actively monitoring the situation for any potential violation.

3/3:

At 3 p.m., a property damage crash occurred on Rangeley Road after a student exiting the Collins Center for the Arts parking lot accidentally rear ended the vehicle in front of them while exiting the lot. UMPD shared that damage was minimal, no one was hurt and insurance information was exchanged.

At 5 p.m., a suspicious complaint was filed from the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity house on College Avenue after a student living in the house reported someone walking in the yard. Officers responded but did not find evidence of anyone on the property, except for footprints in the snow that could have belonged to one of the many people living in the house. The case was closed.

At 7 p.m., an information complaint was filed by the Office of Academic and Student Affairs requesting that a student who had been issued an academic suspension receive a criminal trespass warning and leave campus. UMPD was unable to share why the academic suspension was issued but responded by making contact with the student and issuing the warning.

3/4:

At 11 a.m., an information complaint was filed from the New Balance Recreation Center after staff requested that UMPD help remove a non-student from the basketball court area. Responding officers made contact with the individual, who was cooperative and left when asked.

At 1 p.m., an information complaint was filed through UMPD’s anonymous tip line system called Campus Eyes. The anonymous student reported that several students were being too loud in the early morning hours in Somerset Hall. Due to a lack of information and no specific parties named, UMPD was unable to act on the tip and the case is closed.

3/5:

At 9 a.m., a property damage crash occurred in the Corbett Hall parking lot after a student pulling into an unoccupied space struck an adjacent parked vehicle. The collision caused a moderate amount of damage and responding officers noted there was no camera footage in the area. No one was injured and the owner of the struck vehicle was contacted so both parties could exchange insurance information.
