AEW Full Gear preview

AEW’s final PPV of the year Full Gear is coming up on Saturday, Nov. 19. With eight matches announced and the potential of more, let’s take a look at what the AEW Full Gear match card is shaping up to be.

The AEW World Championship will be defended in the main event as champion Jon Moxley faces Maxwell “MJF” Friedman. This is MJF’s championship opportunity that he earned when he was a surprise entrant in the Casino Ladder match at All Out and won. Jon Moxley is in the midst of his third reign as AEW champion when he won the vacated belt at AEW Grand Slam. MJF has received advice from Jon Moxley’s long-time mentor William Regal, and many expect William Regal to turn on Jon Moxley at the PPV to help MJF win. The build-up for this match has heavily hinted that this is MJF’s moment to finally win a championship in AEW. Both men have been at the top of their game and are arguably having the best runs of their careers. This match will give us a taste of what AEW will look like in 2023. Will the reign of Jon Moxley continue or will it be the year of MJF?

The final of the AEW World Championship Eliminator Tournament will also take place with the winner of the tournament getting a title shot against the winner of Jon Moxley and MJF at Winter Is Coming.

The Acclaimed will defend their tag titles against Swerve In Our Glory in what looks to be the final match of their trilogy. The first time the teams faced was at All Out, where The Acclaimed faced then-tag champions Swerve In Our Glory. Despite the losing effort, they gained the crowd behind them and many thought The Acclaimed should have won the titles. A rematch was made at the post-All Out media scrum for AEW Grand Slam. Due to some interference on the outside by The Acclaimed manager Billy Gunn, they were able to dethrone the champions. Swerve Strickland kidnapped Billy Gunn and broke multiple of his fingers, making both The Acclaimed and his partner Keith Lee furious. Keith Lee has not approved of Swerve Strickland’s actions recently and a breakup has been teased. Swerve Strickland may reach his breaking point and attack Keith Lee if they don’t recapture the tag titles. Both of the previous matches between the two teams have been very fun to watch, so this is one to keep your eye on.

Jamie Hayter will face Toni Storm in hopes to win the AEW Interim Women’s World Championship. Toni Storm and Jamie Hayter had the opportunity to become the interim champion in a fatal four-way when Thunder Rosa announced she was injured. Toni Storm picked up the win, but Jamie Hayter was not pinned, leading to this rematch. Just like MJF, it feels like it is Jamie Hayter’s time to become a champion due to the tension between her and Britt Baker. There is also a potential story between Toni Storm and Thunder Rosa when she returns, with them being in a tag team and both being the main women’s champion. This match may be the hardest to predict on the entire show.

In a highly anticipated contest, Saraya faces Britt Baker in her first match in nearly five years. Saraya was forced into early retirement after a neck injury but has now been cleared to compete. On the Sept. 22, 2022 edition of AEW Dynamite, Saraya made her shocking debut and has been feuding with Britt Baker ever since. Britt Baker is the perfect first opponent for Saraya, as the face of the women’s division. It will be interesting to see if Sayaya has any ring rust or if she’ll be back as one of the best wrestlers in the world.

A four-way match between Chris Jericho, Bryan Danielson, Sammy Guevara and Claudio will be held for the ROH Championship held by Jericho. This match is a culmination of the Blackpool Combat Club/Jericho Appreciate Society feud.

The team of Sting & Darby Allin will face Jay Lethal & Jeff Jarrett. Jay Lethal and Darby Allin had been feuding leading up to Full Gear, but after a match between the two Jeff Jarret hit Darby Allin with a guitar and aligned himself with Jay Lethal. The match was made between the teams the following week. It is rare for Darby Allin and Sting to lose but the numbers game of the Lethal Family may be too much for them to overcome.

Jade Cargill looks to remain undefeated in AEW as she defends the TBS Championship against Nyla Rose. Following Jade Cargill’s successful title defense at Battle of the Belts IV, Nyla Rose stuck in the ring and stole the title. She has been taunting the champion ever since, posting pictures of herself with the championship and claiming she is the champion. This a fresh matchup, the competitors have never wrestled each other before. Jade Cargill is the most dominant champion in AEW history, but Nyla Rose is the most formidable opponent she has faced during her reign as TBS champion. Both these women are great wrestlers so they should put on a fun and enjoyable match.
